An hour later Captain Silverclaw had his six strongest Sergeants standing at attention in his office.
"I know this may be asking a lot from you, but this is the most important Mission we have ever assigned to any member of the organization." He said look in each of them in the eye. "There are too many unknowns, and it may be the most dangerous Mission you have ever been on, but you can't tell anyone else in the organization, and you must go alone." Trying to gauge their reactions he continued, "If any of you do not wish to be a part of this Mission then please speak now." He paused to give them a chance to speak.
The first to respond was a 5 ft 7 in tall woman with a muscular build, short fire red hair, and bright green eyes with a scar going from just behind her left eye to her jaw. She was in her mid-twenties wearing full plate armor with a broadsword on her back and a look of pure Unstoppable determination on her face. "I would be honored to take this Mission and I will return successful or not at all." Then she placed her right fist over her heart and said, "Life and death," then move two fingers in front of her chin, "Truth and Trust," then she moved her hand with all fingers on her right hand gathered together on a spot in the center of her forehead, "To serve the king," then she held her hand out to the ceiling in front of her with her empty Palm up, "We all lost."
Captain Silverclaw was a little taken back by the formal salute from hundreds of years ago after the king of the Midnight Sun disappeared, but he nodded his head in gratitude and scans the rest of the group.
"Although I may not be quite so gung-ho about a mission that we know nothing about," said a 6 ft 3 in tall man in his early 30s with shoulder-length white hair sky blue eyes and the build of an athlete, wearing leather armor, a gray cloak hanging around his neck, two rings on his right hand and a staff in his left, with a short sword on his left hip and a small pouch on his right. "In all the years I've been a night of the Midnight Sun I have never turned down a mission, and I'm not about to start now." Placing his fingers on his forehead he said, "life and death," then put his hand back down.
One by one the remaining four accepted the missions and followed Captain Silverclaw out of his office through the underground facility to the chamber with the prism that was still casting light all over the room and humming louder with every passing minute.
When the chamber came into view all six sergeants gasped at the sight before them, and in the power they were feeling radiate through them.
"What is that, and what is this Mission we're going on?" asked a young 6 ft tall man in his early twenties with Shaggy brown hair and dark brown eyes, wearing half plate armor with a standard longsword on his left hip, a short sword on his right hip, a dagger on his sword belt and a high-quality long bow with a quiver full of swan feather fletched arrows and staff on his back.
Turning to answer the questions Captain Silverclaw said, "About two hours ago the prism in front of you started to light up the whole room, hum, and release the power you are currently feeling. My second-in-command Haidore, after spending months trying to figure out what this thing was, he finally solved at least part of the mystery." Motioning to Haidore, Captain silverclaw stepped aside.
"I recently discovered that the prism in front of you is the crystallized power of the king of the Midnight Sun." Haidore indicated the prism and the murals on the walls, "Between ancient Scrolls that took me years to find, and the murals and markings on the walls in this chamber, there is reason to believe that the king of the Midnight Sun was actually the synchronized version of 4 out of 6 chosen individuals to try and gain this power in front of us."
Leading the group to the scroll he had on the subject he stated, "I have found mention that those six individuals before synchronizing were normal people and that the prism had accepted one person per chosen to act as their kings guard and in doing so bestowed on them a ring with the power to help them find each of the chosen and protect them so they could be gathered at the prism and synchronize with each other." Haidore explained.
Captain silverclaw stepped in and said, "Your missions are to use this chamber to become the King's Guard, then use what power you have been given to find the Chosen and keep them safe till you can bring them here." He explained what he knew. "We don't have any idea who or where they may be, how old they are, or how much danger they may be in."
"We also don't know how long after finding them you will have to wait before bringing them back here." Haidore added, "You could be back here in a fortnight or you may have to wait two or three years before bringing them back here."
"Is everyone clear on the gravity of the situation?" Captain Silverclaw asked.
The red-haired woman responded, "In short after five hundred years a new king of the Midnight Sun is to rise and the chosen need to be found and protected for an uncertain amount of time from an undetermined amount, and most likely variously strengthened, possible threats. Then when the time is right escort them back here to gain their power. Right?" Making sure she had everything correct.
"Yes." Answered Haidore.
The man with the white hair said, "Sounds like fun," a little over enthusiastically. "What do I do first?"
Haidore started to explain what he believed to be the process of becoming a King's Guard. "First you need to take your positions around the room, facing the wall, on each of the symbols that look like this." He said pointing to the symbol of the King's Guard on the scroll in his hands. "Then after you are all in place you each say the color of the pictures of the Sun on the floor to your right."
Haidore had stopped talking long enough for everyone to get a little uncomfortable.
"Then what?" said a 5 ft 9 inch tall woman with silver hair that had golden streaks, I figure that made even royalty jealous and a face that could charm an angel. She was wearing leather armor with a Rapier on her left hip, a mace on her right, and a dagger secured to her right calf with a handcrafted short bow with grey goose feather fletched arrows in a quiver on her back. She also had a personally made Talisman hanging from her neck with a couple of leaves, bones, and feathers lashed to it.
"Then we'll have to wait and see," answered Haidore. "I don't know what happens after that."
Each of the Sergeant started to look at one another in apprehension.
After thinking for a couple seconds a 5 ft 11 in tall man with a little bit of a belly but the strength of an ox, dark brown hair, and hazel eyes, wearing chain mail over a green tunic and a knee-length brown leather coat with a scimitar on his left hip, a dagger on his belt, hand axe on his right hip, and a crossbow with a quiver of bolts on his back and a small pouch on the strap on his chest, started walking to the Kings Guard symbol next to the mark of a White Sun.
Seeing this, with silent acknowledgement the remaining Sergeants circled the room being careful not to get too close to the prism and when all of them were ready they stepped on the symbol of the King's Guard behind them.
As soon as they stepped on the symbols the flashing lights froze and the humming stopped. When both feet were on the symbol they started to call out the color of the symbol on the floor for the right.
"Black Sun" said the black haired man.
"Red Sun" the red haired woman said.
"Yellow Sun" called the white haired man.
"White Sun" said the man with the belly.
"Blue Sun" yelled the blonde woman.
"Green Sun" hailed the silver haired woman.
When the last one was said the prism started to hum louder than before and from each point of the prism a beam of light matching the color of the sun and was pointing to shout out and hit the wall where the Kings Guard symbol was. the symbol started to glow and a handprint formed in the wall with the symbol on the middle finger of the mark.
Not knowing why, but with this strange compulsion, the six sergeants in unison started to walk forward. When they reach the wall they put their right hand on the handprint. As their hand began to sink into the wall the prism showered each of them with their corresponding color so bright no one could see what was happening.
The humming increased and became more high pitched as the seconds ticked by.
Just as the ears of Captain Silverclaw and Haidore started to bleed there was an explosion of Power and Light that knocked them against the wall then disappeared.
In the chamber were the six sergeants standing with their right hands on the wall with the rings of the Kings Guard on their middle fingers, and in their left hand was a small wooden box with a symbol of the Sun they had stood next to on it.
