The carriage ride was indeed very long, not to Daphne's surprise. She sat in it, too afraid to close her eyes with the devil so close nearby.
They had slept on the same bed already, but she still could not feel comfortable around him. He did not care about the silence either as he ran his fingers through his ink black hair, closing his eyes as he looked asleep.
Daphne looked at him as his eyes were closed. She had been here for less than a week, yet so much has changed already. Humans did really have a good ability to adapt.
Lucifer's eyes suddenly shot open and Daphne broke out of her thoughts, quickly looking away but Lucifer had already noticed that she was staring at him.
He grinned, not resting anymore as he moved closer to the edge of the seat, asking, "Daphne. . . What an interesting name. I have never heard of it before."
"People aren't named Lucifer often either," Daphne responded. Her father had named her, and many people in the past have told her that her name was special and not common, in other words, weird.
Her father was a weird person in general. He was a botanist and although he was nice, many people in the community often described him as a little crazy.
He liked hiding in his office, where no one else was ever allowed to enter. He had a liking for weird things and he had a large brown book of fantasy stories about fairies, vampires, mermaids, and such that he would read to Daphne when she was little.
Her mother, also a fashion designer but not as successful, would often say that she liked William, Daphne's father, for his difference from others.
She wondered if time passed as quickly here as back home. . . If so, her parents would certainly miss her. She missed them too. . .
Hearing her response, Lucifer chuckled softly, pursing his lips out as he thought about it, "Of course. No one else in Healeh would dare be named Lucifer."
Daphne looked at the narcissistic devil and rolled her eyes slightly. That was not what she meant.
"Did your parents name you? Where is your family from?" Lucifer straightened his expression again as he questioned her further casually, as if they were having a normal conversation.
Daphne looked down sheepishly, not sure of what to say. What could she say?
"I have no family," she responded. She wasn't lying. She had no family here.
Hearing this, Lucifer did not seem surprised at all as he nodded. Usually, girls at the Brothel were either from bad families or had no family. That was why they would end up in the Brothel.
Although the Brothel was a place filled with opportunities, middle or upper class families would not send their daughters to a place like that.
After speaking about her family, there was a moment of silence. Daphne thought that perhaps Lucifer thought he had spoken about a sensitive topic, and she did not correct him, as she did not like talking with him either.
She had a feeling that when he spoke to her today, he had another meaning or purpose behind his questions, making her alarmed.
And indeed, she should be alarmed, for the devil's next words were: "You aren't a fairy."
It was not a question, but a statement. There was no hesitation or doubt in his voice, almost as if he knew she wasn't a fairy for a fact.
Daphne's eyes widened as she looked up, meeting with his stern red eyes. Although she was certain he knew already, she did not know how he would react if she said she wasn't.
She still had to try, "I am."
Lucifer's lips curled up slightly as he leaned back, folding his arms together, "Show me your wings."
Daphne had nothing to say now. She had not known that fairies had wings - Well, of course fairies had wings, but she did not know that he would use this fact against her!
Daphne pressed her lips together, looking down, "I'm not a fairy."
Lucifer nodded, pleased with her honest response as he looked to the side deep in thought.
"How did you know?" Daphne asked, wondering what had given her away. She had to fix it before anyone else in the Black family realized that she was not a fairy.
Maryanne had said something about the Blacks not liking humans. Now that she knew who the Blacks were, she did not want to be on their bad list. . . Although she probably was already.
Lucifer continued to stare blankly at the side of the carriage, replying several seconds later, "A feeling."
Daphne scowled. A feeling? What feeling? How could he be so certain from a feeling? However, it was obvious the devil would not tell her anything more.
"So, what are you?" Lucifer looked back at her, his eyes traveling down her body as he tried to form a guess, but he could not tell.
Daphne gulped. Her only choice now was to be honest, "Human."
At once, Lucifer furrowed his eyebrows together.
