Chapter 7 - Chapter Seven

I looked behind me, hoping to see Leonard following me. My heart sank as I found I was alone, walking this lone yard in the blizzards that pounded against the harsh winds. Our hideout was Trent's idea, though I am grateful to the man that had faked the death of my uncle and me. I couldn't express how grateful I was to the rogue FBI agent who was working undercover to protect us from my sister. Trent has seen both sides to the madness that Rosaline and Jarrod caused because one passionate night between the wrong people has led us all to this point in our lives. Many lives lost, it threw reputations out of the window, all because two married people committed the act of adultery. Their selfish lusts have brought an entire city to an uproar of confusion. I sighed, holding my jacket closed around myself against the winds. As I opened the door to the cottage that we have called home for years, Jarrod sat in front of the fire, a smirk dancing as casual on his face as the dancing flames in the mantel. I stopped and looked at him, my heart beating uneasily, as I prepared for the answer to the question I was about to ask. "What are you thinking about?"

"My dear girl. I have a tremendous report." He walked over to the cameras as I followed, seeing the various areas around the town. The once overpopulated city is now a place where the bad people go to escape their punishments. The town looked as it normally did, dreary, lifeless. However, on one camera was a figure lying motionless on the ground. Their status showed they were not alert of their being covered by snow. The figure was a blond woman. A woman that I knew all too well as being my sister. I looked at Jarrod.

"Is she?"

He laughed. "If not now, she will be. She's been lying there for several moments, getting shot from behind. Oh, how the mighty have fallen. Leonard is not only yours, those needles in his skull. I have released enough venom from them in the shock that he won't even remember her. And with the dropping temperatures, well, he won't have much recollection of anything in another hour's time." He looked at me, the smirk still playing across his lips. "Your welcome, dear girl. Now go collect your prize." He went into another fit of laughter, walking from the room.

I looked at the camera, my heart mourned for my sister. However, I should be happier with this victory. I couldn't bring myself to feel the waves of satisfaction that my uncle had embraced. Yes, Leonard was mine, but at the cost of losing his family, his memories. I sighed, sinking into the chair behind me placing my head in my hands. The sounds of the door opening brought me to look at the intruder. I looked to the door seeing Leonard, who was barely standing. He looked to be in great pain. I turned the cameras off, running to him. He looked at me as I wrapped his arm around my shoulders, helping him to the couch, laying him down. "You're freezing. I'll treat your wounds and get you some hot coffee. Just stay right here. Don't move, stay right here." I ran from the room to tend to my tasks at hand.

I returned shortly after lying my supplies on the coffee table, kneeling to him. "Here I brought you a cup of coffee, your favorite, freshly brewed and black." I stood to my feet, helping him sit up, handing him the coffee.

With a shaky hand, he looked at me. "My head feels like it's on fire. What have you done to me!" He dropped the coffee, holding his hands to his head. "Make it stop right now! Natasha!"

I stood up, running to the bookshelf, where I had placed the remote. Seeing that it was shattered, I heard Leonard scream in pain before going limp. I ran to him, hearing faint moans. I lay him back down on the couch as the needles clicked before falling to the ground with faint thumps. "Happy Easter, pumpkin. He'll come around soon enough. I'm going out. Don't wait up." I heard Jarrod say and without another word said, he left the two of us.

Tears fell from my eyes for my sister and Leonard. I walked over to Leonard. I sat beside him, laying his head on my lap. Allowing the tears to come down. "I never wanted this. I wanted you, Leonard. But not like this. Grace had her moments, but neither one of you deserved this. I'm so sorry."

I stroked his hair, wiping away my tears. I couldn't help Grace, but I would not force Leonard to stay in this town. I would get him out of here and start a new life for the two of us. He deserved that, and he would get just that.
