Chapter 24 - Chapter XVIII: The End Of The Beginning

The day after Freia (now Aurelia) arrived. The horde would pass through the Uninhabited Island. They would use it as a resting point, before once again starting their move and heading towards the mainland. Unfortunately for them, there would be a force of over ten thousand waiting for them on shore and in the surrounding sea. Most of them being animals and magical beasts that had answered Aurelia's call for help.

Noticing the one who had called for them obeying a certain person, they also shifted their minds to take orders from the baby too, who Aurelia was bowing down to.

"So this is Bert. Hello sir." Kenneth, who was seated on the shore, saw a whale floating on the surface nearby and waved his tiny hand at it. The whale blew water through it's blowhole, as a greeting towards the baby.

"He's big isn't he? Didn't know magical beasts could grow to be twice as big as their normal species counterparts." (Lena)

Somewhere nearby, Catalyn and Aurelia were in the middle of a staring contest. Most likely because both of them refer to Kenneth as their master, and think only one of them is fit to be his attendant.

The plan they had discussed yesterday; a simple defensive operation. Since more than ten thousand monsters from the north would appear, they had to spread their forces, namely, the monsters in Aurelia's command, all around the island.

The island, being Uninhabited, also served as a great temporary home for the land animals who hitched a ride on some of the bigger aquatic lifeforms. Using Catalyn's power, they had placed multiple portals all around the island for easy transportation around the large area. This allowed the allied monsters to reach places where reinforcements were needed. Of course, all of this would not be possible if it wasn't for Kenneth's Mind Link, which had grown far stronger since his training started. He could now hold it up for more than eight hours straight- six if he used magic along with it. Even so, the effect could clearly be seen, as his skill now spanned the whole island, allowing him to communicate orders to Aurelia, and in turn, help relay the orders to all the monsters.

Lucas, not being of much use as he was a close range physical type, had spent most of his day building towers in strategic locations as landmarks to help navigate the island. It was decided that he would only engage in battle if the monsters got to close and managed to enter land.

Being the only island separating the north from the mainland, this was the north monsters' last stop before reaching the continent.

It was now almost afternoon.

"Master, I've come to report." Aurelia entered the tent where Kenneth was staying in.

"What's up, Aurelia?" (Kenneth)

"The jellyfish have spotted the horde quickly approaching. It is estimated that they'll reach the island in thirty minutes."

"Hmm." Kenneth nods. "And what does the horde consist of?" He asked.

"Plenty of narwhals-turned magical beasts lead the horde, with their sharp horns being a huge threat. Beluga whales, in the back, also magical beasts that have the power of sound magic, and use it to communicate orders to the beasts. The polar bears, the most ferocious ones; the smallest being thirteen feet long. The ones who are magical beasts have control over Ice magic, allowing them to make temporary bridges, strong enough to support the weight of other land animals."

"Sheesh, that certainly sounds frightening. What does our force consist of?" (Kenneth)

"Mainly consisting of aquatic animals that live in tropical waters, our main force is, at most twice theirs. But we don't have as many animal-turned magical beasts like they do. Most of the magical beasts being whales, sharks and giant squid. We have the advantage of preparation though. Most of the enemy will be tired from swimming, the bears having used their Ice magic to carry other land animals all the way, while we have been waiting here in ambush."

"Nice. Looks like they'll be here soon." (Kenneth)

Thirty minutes later.

"First sighting of a narwhal, leading the horde. Seems like it was sent as a scout. Should we kill it before the enemies notice?" (Aurelia)

"No, no. Do the opposite. Tell all your animals NOT to attack it. Let them think it's safe so they'll let their guard down." (Kenneth)

"As you wish, master. Bert, tell your force to not attack the narwhal yet." (Aurelia)

"The narwhal seems to have gone back to the main force." Aurelia reports. "The jellyfish have also finished setting up their makeshift underwater electric mind field."

Aurelia had ordered the jellyfish earlier to band together, leaving minimal distance between each other. Whenever a lifeform not small enough tried to pass, the jellyfish would unleash the built up electric magic, hurting anything that tried to force it's way through.

And there, the horde was soon going to collide the mine field.

The ones leading the charge, the narwhals, upon seeing the jellyfish, made use of their long tusk to penetrate the almost transparent bodies of the jellyfish. Some were not as lucky. The jellyfishes' transparent bodies made it hard to locate, shocking a good number of narwhals in the process.

Above the surface. The polar bears had made an ice bridge, carrying many of the land animals.

This made bears the top priority for elimination. Swooping down from the sky, were various birds, shouting squaks and quacks of war. Their "hit and run" tactic proved to be very effective. Most of the land animals, not having many attacks to use on the agile and evasive birds, could only stand still and watch the bears, the main source of the ice bridge get pecked endlessly.

One bear down, two bear down. Multiple polar bears were injured, and not being able to handle fighting and maintaining the bridge, it was either one or the other. Some of the ice bridges broke off. The result; many of the land animals fell into the water, with some being unable to swim, others waddled their way to small nearby rocks and islands.

Just from these two attacks, most of the enemies' land attack force was gone, leaving the whales, seals and walruses still swimming for the island.

"Master, sightings of various water creatures confirmed to be heading to this island." (Aurelia)

"Great! Let's get the ambush going." (Kenneth)

For the aquatic monsters, they thought that the island was a safe haven from the attacks. Except they were wrong; it was the enemy's headquarters.

"They won't last long in our territory. Finish them off!" Aurelia said to the animals.

Sharks came out from the depths of the sea, grabbing a sizable monster each with their razot sharp teeth, thrashing widly. Bert and his group of whales led the charge on the enemy's Beluga Whales, who were being guarded by the Walruses and Emperor Penguin Magic Beasts.

"*Slam!* The impact of Bert's body colliding on a walruses blubber vibrated the sea, sending sound waves all around, and knocking the walrus backwards.

"The Beluga Whales are the enemy's commanders! Focus on them mainly and attack when possible!" Aurelia commanded.

Giant squid swam up from the depths, wrapping themselves around the fishes, allowing Bert's group to unleash deadly blows.

"Report from the west jellyfish. We spotted another group, this one numbering five thousand, consisting of mostly penguins and seals. I'm positive the guard force can handle it, but we'll keep some reinforcements on standby." (Aurelia)

"I'd like to experience what it feels like swimming underwater. Could you ask Bert if I could Mind Link with him?" (Kenneth)

"Sure." A brief pause later... "He says okay." (Aurelia)

"Nice. I believe you guys can handle the remaining enemies, so I'll be having some fun with Mr. Bert. Bye now." Kenneth's body falls the ground as his consciousness is removed.

"Mind if I hitch a ride, Mr.Bert?" Kenneth asks the whale, now connected with him through Mind Link.

The whale agrees, and together with Kenneth, they explore the underwater ocean depths.

"Damn, there sure is a lot of coral and plant life florishing down here. Oh, hello Nemo." Kenneth sees a clownfish pass by.

Meanwhile, back at the Uninhabited Island.

"Confirmed, second enemy force, eliminated. All enemies presumed to be exterminated. Alright.. rest easy for now, guys. Thanks for your hard work, and thank you for your assistance, Krodoa."

The next day.

Now that the monster horde was stopped, the gods had given them the thumbs up to return to Fahndra, to prepare for the event that would happen in a month. Hitching a ride on Bert, the group soon return to Argonsville. What would their excuse be this time, I wonder?

Meanwhile at the Gaia continent mainland, near Osno, Gaia's commercial harbor.

"Didn't we receive reports about the noise that happened a week ago affected the Northern Region? What happened to the monster horde that would attempt to migrate down south?" A man wearing a general's attire is speaking through a hologram.

"We really don't know. It was indeed confirmed that the monster horde numbered around fifteen thousand... I wonder what happened." Someone replies.
