Chereads / Nine Dragon Gates / Chapter 3 - Once Upon A Time

Chapter 3 - Once Upon A Time

There was once a great country, a land rich in nature and its produce. The land was vast and named Prayanagara, or people called it by the name of the Land of Hope. People live with all the convenience, prosperity that pleasures everyone.

When the country reached its glory, eight new lands were formed to protect Prayanagara from the attacks of foreign nations who tried to colonize the rich land. They opened eight new lands in the eight corners of the wind, then transformed into an unparalleled sturdy fortress.

Eight sturdy fortresses became the entrance gate for the outside world to reach the Prayanagara mainland. Of course, it's only for people who come with good intentions—in trade, for example.

Because of the sturdy defense of Prayanagara country so that the land of hope got a new nickname: the Gate of the Nine Dragons.

Living prosperously for hundreds of generations left eight families of kings from eight new lands lulled into pleasure. They forget themselves, forget the ultimate purpose of forming eight new kingdoms.

Foreigners never gave up to conquer Prayanagara. If there can't use any sword—by means of war—then a shortsighted mind is the answer. Agitation and vilification hit the eight new lands.

Pride begins to permeate every soul that feels more entitled to the main throne at Prayanagara. Malice began to burn every greedy soul. People's lives are never the same again.

Prayanagara's main throne is now the target of the greed of eight new countries ridden by foreign interests.

The Abdideva—those who devoted their lives to the Gods—who had been in the neighborhood of the main palace in Prayanagara and always spent their days praying for the prosperity and peace of the land of hope, were forced to take action to protect Prayanagara's throne in one grand building called Mandira—they called it: The Holy Building.

The actions of the Abdidevas were to cast a mantra for the Gods in Swargaloka—mean heaven—to bring disaster to the land of hope which has now lost its hope because of the behavior of the rulers in eight new lands, while the Gardapati—Prayanagara warriors, or laypeople call them: Holy Warriors—tried to block the rampant attacks.

Tit for tat. As if the Gods did not want Mandira to be possessed by the greedy and cunning men, then, on the seventh night of the attack on Prayanagara there was a terrible natural disaster.

A country that for hundreds of years has always been safe and peaceful is now hit by a tempest that destroys everything on its surface.

The whirlwind danced like the fingers of the God of Death, targeting every soul that ran around for protection.

Hurricanes destroy every fishing boat, the houses of the people are flattened by the ground hit by crazy waves or fly carried by the storm.

The condition is further aggravated by the eruption of volcanoes, lava bursts burn anything that still stands firmly on the face of the land.

As if the punishment were not enough, a great earthquake was brought. The surface of the ground is like a living thing that moves wildly, then it melts and splits at many points.

The devastating earthquake also brought another much more terrible disaster, a gigantic tsunami.

The giant wave destroyed everything left in the land that people once knew as the Land of Hope. Now, all that is gone, the land is nothing more than the land of death.

On the ninth day, when the natural disasters subsided. Those who survived were shocked by the reality of Prayanagara's disappearance. The first kingdom disappeared without a trace. It was as if the magnificent building that had been there changed with a puddle of seawater.

Where did the country disappear? No one knows for sure.

The survivors can't do much, the only thing left now is to reimagine the life they once had, rebuilding life on the land where eight new lands once existed.

Gradually a new civilization was created in the land of the former eight kingdoms. Supported by rich nature and abundant marine products, then all that they can achieve.

Unfortunately, the greedy and devious nature of the descendants of the kings did not disappear with the great disaster that once destroyed their prosperous lives.

As if not learning from the mistakes of the past, even now those who claim to be heirs to the throne make rules that hurt the lives of many people.

People's lives are never the same again. Their social status is now divided into groups and castes. Of course, the ones who suffer the most here are those who are labeled as commoners aka the lowest caste.

The wisdom that was once taught by the kings of Prayanagara and the Abdidevas seemed to have no imprint at all in the heads of the leaders of the new civilization. All they remember is the pleasure, wealth, and manipulation of people's lives.

Slowly, all the glory and majesty of Prayanagara was no longer unheard of. Buried for thousands of years, and became only one bedtime legend in later generations.

Of the eight new kingdoms, seven of them are again immersed in their lives that are sprees and lavish. As if life itself were theirs forever, they forgot death, forgot the great disaster that once destroyed their land.

Only one country has learned from the mistakes of its predecessors. They did not build a magnificent palace-like their seven relatives in other lands. All the things that were taught by the Abdidevas, also that had been proclaimed by the kings of Prayanagara as guidance in society are now re-arranged by the people of that one country. It was recorded on the pages of the book that they kept in one large, highly secret room. And they closed themselves off from the outside world, even with seven other kingdoms which were still relatives to them.

The other seven kingdoms regarded the latter land as a land-that-was-forgotten. They think they are left behind because they don't think like the other seven. They laughed at the land, even more so because most of those who inhabited the eighth country were those who had dark skin color.

The behavior of the kings and the inhabitants of the seven kingdoms turned racist. They mocked and considered the people in the eighth country to be cursed by the Gods. Tens or even hundreds of years later the inhabitants of the seven kingdoms completely forgot their relatives in the eighth country.

But the Gods were fair enough. The eighth country was endowed with more natural wealth than the other seven countries. They did not have a king, but the people's lives were so quiet and peaceful.

Gradually, the seven kingdoms began to lose their source of wealth. Rice fields and farms often experience crop failure, or fish in rivers and lakes that suddenly die because of the waters that begin to be polluted, until the air conditions are getting worse so that many people are affected by the disease.

The trials for the trials that befell the country of the seven kingdoms did not at all make the royal family repent and do good, instead, their cunning and greed grew, especially clearly they knew how beautiful the eighth country was. The wealth of nature, the produce of the earth, and the sea are certainly abundant. And of course, that means a new target, a new source of wealth for the seven kingdoms.

Those living in the eighth country are well aware of the threat. With all their power and effort, they set up unusual barricades to block the people of the seven kingdoms from entering their territory, as well as foreigners.

However, greed always has its way of being able to break all these obstacles.

And this is where this story begins...
