Grabbing my bag, I put on my shoes, pet Juice(my dog), and then raced out the door. Raising my arm, the time read '6:50 am.' I had no time for breakfast since I was running late for school. Not wanting to cut it any closer than need be, I turned towards my neighbors fence and jumped it. Rolling as I landed, I bounced back up, ran from their dog, jumped the other side of the fence, ran across the road, repeated the same action, and saw my school not far now. Making a mad dash, without looking at my watch, I was for once glad my mom told me to join Track and Field. As I closed the distance between me and the bus ramp, the gate was closed by our security guard.
"No!" Raising my arm to look at my watch, it read '7:06 am.'
Laughing at me, the security guard cracked open the gate, "C'mon in, Diana. I know you probably overslept because of last night's meet."
"You mean it!"
"I'll talk you into being here on time, just get to class and say your moms sick and you were caring for her before you left," he smiled as I ran by.
"Thanks Mr.Gregor!"
"No problem kiddo."
Going up to the door, they were left unlock them. Mr.Gregor must've knew I was gonna show late. Wanting to aviod drawing more attention, I just calmly walked to the stairs. Reaching the base, I went up them and instantly spotted pain. "Maybe if I just, don't, look at him," I whispered to myself as I turned my attention to the ground as I walked to class.
"Missy."
I jumped. "Maybe he meant someone else."
"Or you," the man put his hand on my shoulder.
Turning around, I smiled at Mr.Handy, "Oh, Handy, you silly man," I laughed nervously.
"Miss Hollander. It does seem to be that you aren't in class."
"Oh you," I tried to slip free.
"Can I ask why," Mr.Handy placed his hand on his walkie that was attached to his waist belt.
"Sigh. If it means I won't get in trouble; promise you won't tell any of the other staff?"
"If it's that serious, than alright," Mr.Handy stepped back and began to walk away.
Smiling at near defeat, I went back to my quest to reach my homeroom. Getting to the door, I knocked gently, afriad I would disrupt a possible lesson. Opening the door, I saw my classmate Lucas hold it open for me.
"Look who decided to show."
"My mothers sick, so go shove it," I whispered under my breath as I walked in to take a seat. Scooting inward, my chair was loud against the tile flooring. "My bad," I chuckled nervously.
"Now that the distraction has been subdued, or is there still more you wish to cause, Miss Hollander," Mrs.Francis fixed her glare onto me.
"Uh....not really miss," I took off my bag and placed it on the floor beside me.
"Then I shall continue."
Going on with her instructions, Mrs.Francis spoke in a monotone manner. Most students had fallen asleep because of the lack of excitement, or interest. However, I was scrolling through my phone underneath my desk. I'm confident she knows what I'm doing, but she had stopped caring when half her class would fall asleep. My reason for scrolling through my phone wasn't irresponsible though. I was using Indeed to find jobs hiring. Scrolling through the many applicants, I found one that seemed intriguing: Dr.Xanders Exquisite Emporium. As the school day went on, it was last period before I knew it.
"Well class, it seems that our time is coming to a end," Mr.Rogers placed his piece of chalk on his desk and then sat on top of it, "But before you all are released, let me give you some wisdom."
I raised my hand.
"Yes, Diana?"
"Wisdom? Why give us advice now when class is about to end?"
Mr.Rogers crossed his legs, "Well let's see. I just have a feeling that someones going to make a decision today that this may help."
"No disrespect, sir, but now you're sounding like some cryptic super villain," a voice from behind me spoke up.
"Now Chris, I assure you I'm just your average, low-pay, boring teacher, who's just here to teach you history," he cleaned his glasses, "Here's the piece of wisdom; For what it's worth, opportunities are worth taking. If it presents itself, you should take it but be aware what that is. It could be the greatest thing ever, or, it could be the greatest mistake ever," once he finished speaking, the bell had rung.
Being dismissed, people hadn't wasted a moment in getting up to get out. Walking down the stairs and into the main lobby, I recieved a text. Checking it, it was from that place she was looking at ealier. Examining it, the employer said she was hired and that she starts today. "Wow, ok then," it seemed skeptical, but I needed to start earning some sort of income. Pulling up the address, I traversed through the crowd of children and to where Dr.Xanders Exquisite Emporium is. Reaching a small store, I pushed open the door and walked in. Hearing a bell above my head, I went straight for the main desk. Seeing no one coming, I decided to have a look around. The inside of the shop looked like a gift shop. Picking up something that resembled a snow globe. Shaking it, I could hear screams that sounded human like, "Scary."
"So you must be Diana."
Frightened, I jumped up in shock and dropped the snow globe, "Oh god! I'm so sorry!"
The old man bent over a picked up something that couldn't be seen.
"Ummmm, what was that for?"
The man looked me dead in my eyes, "Oh, I just picked up the corpse of a man from a tiny civilization you just murdered."
"I did what?"
"By the way," the man gave me his hand, "The names Dr.Xander."
"You can't just tell me I murdered a tiny civilization and then introduce yourself!"
"Yet I just did," he placed his hand on my shoulder, "Now come meet your fellow coworkers." Turning towards the back, he lead me onward.
Once I walked into the back room, I saw a girl who looked roughly my age and dress like a goth, and another girl who dressed like a bookworm. The goth girl wore a choker with silver chains hanging off it, had her hair done in pigtails, wore black boots, a baggy black shirt with some sort of band on it, and a petite black skirt with white accents. The bookworm girl wore a tan turtleneck sweater, dark blue jeans, and old worn converse shoes.
Dr.Xander pointed to the goth girl, "That is Sydney Vader," then the pointed to the bookworm girl, "And that there is Vanessa Shimmers."
"Hey," Sydney said in a low voice.
"Nice to meet ya," Vanessa said overly enthusiasticly.
"And this is Diana Hollander."
"Uh....likewise," I smiled nervously.
"Great! Now that you're all acquainted with one another, you'll be heading out on your first job; to retrieve something for me," Dr.Xander pulled out a device that looked like a gameboy.
"I thought this was a delivery company?" Vanessa poked her fingers.
"Potato potato."
"What," the three girls said in sync.
"Let's just get right to it! Money is time and time is money!" Dr.Xander hit the top of my head.
"But....but why me?" I said dissapointly.
"Who cares, let's get this debriefing going!"
