The news about Dome's condition was very devastating. The lie had so affected his mind so much that it would be difficult for him to put his thoughts together into words. The love of her life would not be able to express his love for her anymore. Would she be able to survive it? Why would friends wish to separate them?
The first visit to the doctor gave her more insight into what had just happened to him. He told her he may not be the same again. Mamle missed him so much. Life would never be the same again without him. Gradually, love no longer made sense to Mamle. Apathetic as never before and grumpy unlike the first few days of butterflies in her stomach, it was difficult to find pleasure in engaging any man in any conversation, not even with Adotey, her supposed secret admirer. The only emotion she felt for him was hatred. There was no longer any fling and although she could attract men with a little effort, she just did not care about her appearance anymore. The pain was too much to bear so much that she abhorred everything that reminded her of love. The rising emotions which followed every conversation called 'butterflies in the stomach' were bitter pills to swallow.
"Did we not tell you not to waste your time on this man? It's not worth it," said Agyeiwaa, once again, troubling her emotions and making her feel worse about herself. Everywhere Mamle turned, people blamed her for her choice and chastised her for being obstinate. There was no longer any slight tinge of hope coming from anywhere of a possible restoration of her dignity.
Desperate to overcome loneliness, desolation and the emptiness that lurked in the shadows of her heart, Mamle fought hard for survival.
With much encouragement from the psychiatrist, Mamle's greatest goal was not to allow her situation to coerce her into despair. It would, in her opinion, be prudent to keep her head up high and face life head-on, moving heaven and earth to survive. Mamle loved to keep up appearances and would fight to keep things the way they were before she and Dome fell apart. Nothing would dare change that.
