Chapter 61 - Lost Cause

"Wow, I am so impressed. This is the fastest job done by anybody, and the thing is, according to my cyber security team in my company, this website security is so complicated, hackers would take years to crack, again, I'm impressed!" A client James had just submitted his work forty-five minutes ago praised. James emotions did not fluctuate with the praise, he just nodded and replied on the conference call.

"Thank you very much for appreciating my work Mr Marcó, and I'm glad you are satisfied with it," James responded to the man. The man continued praising James, who was getting a bit impatient. This man is too jovial for a company manager, he thought.

"I don't know, how did you do it? I gave you this request forty-five minutes ago, and you completed it at the same time I went to go order coffee. Did you use a template, or it was not just only you?" the man probed with surprise still registered in his face.

James sighed internally and slowly replied. "I work alone, and as much as I would like to explain this to you, I cannot tell you my secrets, but one thing I like is that if you want more requests, you can drop them all in my inbox and I promise to attend to them as quickly as possible. Thank you for reaching out to me. It's a pleasure doing business with you." James attempted to end the video conference.

"Wait hold on Mr James, one more thing. Your camera was turned off from the beginning of the call, so please turn it on so that we could see you" a middle-aged man among the call spoke for the first time.

James shook his head "I'm sorry sir, but I cannot reveal my identity because of some security reasons, I'm sorry for disappointing you" James said.

James did not want to reveal his face, not only because his life was in threat at the moment, but because of his appearance. If these people found out that it was a little kid that designed their website backend, they might freak out, and probably question the authenticity of the website backend, so it's best they did not know who he was.

"Thank you very much sir, but I'll be leaving now" James concluded and exited the conference call. He then turned off the voice changer and closed the conference window. He then proceeded to go for another request and sent them a message.

James had deleted that message regarding the desktop app development that JMH sent to his inbox. He sent them an email yesterday, but they were yet to reply, so James had no desire to wait for them, so he simply deleted them and started another project.

Around 12:10 pm on Sunday, James began hearing noises coming out of the house, indicating the arrival of Martha and the rest. James did not have the desire to go out and welcome them, so he continued doing his work. His fingers kept flying over the keyboard rapidly to the point that he could not see the outline of his hands anymore, but James mind was working faster, and that made typing seem slow.

'I wonder if I can use my mind to type. Would it not be great to make something like that?' James thought. This idea sounded very reasonable in his mind. These days, people rely on keyboards to type messages to one another, as a replacement for handwritten letters.

As technology grew since the pandemic, people began using their body nerves to type messages. This technology was favoured by the masses, so it became very popular in the market. People bought the nerve detection device and replaced them with the keyboards they once loved.

All they need to do was to make small gestures of the letters they want to type, and the computer prediction system would easily capture those micro-movements and send them to the screen in real-time.

As good as this technology was though, some people still preferred to use their keyboards, not because the tech was slow, but because they grew up with using keyboards, so not many were willing to change from what was familiar to them to something new altogether, and James was one of those people. He thought that mind-controlled typing was more feasible than muscle-controlled typing.

Throughout the rest of the day, James stayed in his room coding and studying, without taking a single break. He did not know how long he had been staying until Nicolas stepped into his room. James was startled and he wanted to ask him what he wanted, before realizing they shared the same room, so James swallowed his question.

He stared at the time, which was already four hours to midnight. James decided to call it a day and unplugged his smartphone. He then proceeded to google the anatomy of the brain, and how it functioned.

'The brain sends and receives electrical and chemical messages from and to the body simultaneously. So, if I invent a device that connects the brain to a computing device, that device would take those messages, convert them, and send them to the computer to analyze the signal.

This is how I'm going to type messages through the mind. But where would I see the company that would manufacture the components needed for this to work?' James thought as he read collections of articles relating to the brain. He wanted to understand as much information about the brain as possible.

James didn't think too much about this, so he plugged his smartphone and headed outside the house to receive fresh air and feed the cat. But before he left, he made sure his PC was connected to his smartphone and took one can of tuna and a recyclable plate before heading outside.

"Where are you going, James?" Martha asked while she was coming with the plates for dinner. "Good evening aunt Martha" James greeted, but Martha ignored it and glare at him coldly "I asked you a question. Where are you going, and what are you doing with a plate and a can of tuna?"

"Oh this, I want to feed a cat that is outside. The owner has not come to claim it, so while it would be waiting, I figured that I should be feeding it till it is reunited with its owner." James said with one breath.

Martha smiled, but she was not smiling "Oh, that's right. We are struggling to put food on the table every single day, and you took a lost cat and bought it a whole can of tuna. Wow, James, you are a lost cause. Do you not know how heartless you are? By the way, where did you even get the money to buy all these?"

James emotions fluctuated a little bit by that statement..
