Chapter 47 - Estium

Paperwork… fucking paperwork

Even as a jaded member of one of the most prolific and dangerous mafias within the world Cane still feared paperwork, just the sheer amount of it that had built up over his absence left him stumped. How the hell did it build up so much over time, and the consent forms! Oh, the fucking consent forms! How did the transfer of just one inmate into his care warrant 6 of them!?

He'd spent hours of both today and yesterday combing through the hundreds of pages he had to sign after his session with Akari, who hadn't even shown up for today's session. Filing through dozens of terms and conditions, new policies involving the hiring of mercenaries and exheroes for security, and multiple surveys concerning his mental well being, which he had to lie on as to avoid the risk of being called in to be phycological screened about his newfound hate towards paper factories

"Fuck me" Cane grumbled as he filled in the fiftieth and tenth last paper, both pissed about the work he was being forced to do and feeling a mix of emotions concerning his own choices

He felt slightly worried that he had scared off Akari during their last session, if she didn't want to do therapy that would cause him some trouble, and potentially cause both future patients to doubt his ability as well as the CRC (catacomb representative council). He also hadn't had a chance to meet with either Alice or Jasmin since his return and disregarding his own weird feelings concerning the two he really didn't need a return of the "blood rider" which was what the media had manicured the two after their breakout

"Don't tempt me" a voice called out from the doorway

Turning his head from the earsore covering his lap Cane saw Kira peaking through the door, and waving

"Please, come in," he said, gesturing for her to enter, despite what he had expected, during the past day and a half he and Kira had really hit it off, despite her rather hands-on approach to friendship she was quite the joy to be around, always cracking jokes and the like, it would be quite the time if she ever met Leandro

"What brings you into my office at this time, miss Valeriya?" he asked with a smirk, taking the same tone he would a patient

Rolling her eyes Kira walked in, flopping onto the couch across from and draping her arms across its back, causing the zipper of her jacket to look like it was ready to explode thanks to her amble muscle and assets

"oh please, I was literally just outside the door all day, and it's not like I need therapy, I'm quite happy being insane," she said, grinning viciously, reminding him of a hungry bear, "no, the reason I came in, is to inform you that the warden has made a rather interesting decision that he felt you should be aware of"

"This being?"

"Thanks to the new policy, which allows for the hiring of people like me…blah blah blah, we got access to an Estium collar!" she told him triumphantly

Pausing, Cane ran a double-take on her words in his head "Seriously?"

"Yep" she answered, still grinning

15 years ago, a scientist by the name of Jeroen Estus discovered a new ore on the ocean floor within the pacific ocean, the first thing documented about this ore now dubbed Estium was its ability to weaken the abilities of those near it. When Estus had discovered it he had been using his ability to turn his body to stone as a way to safely dive, and upon discovery of the properties of the ore at a personal level he had lost control of his abilities and ended up having both his legs crushed by the water pressure

Originally the ore had been used by a variety of prisons as a way to keep their powered inmates under control but after a villain group named Limbless used the ore to depower and kill 47 heroes varying from vigilantes to government recognized idealists there was an immense crackdown on its use and distribution, allowing only recognized supermaxes and catacombs to use them to imprison inmates, and even then in small amounts

"Why the hell would the overseer need one of those? If we had one for each S rank inmate it would make sense but even then, they have me" it was true, one of the main reasons he was hired was due to the catacomb originally having no access to Estium cells or containment methods

"Well from what he said…" she said, taking a moment to build tension "dates"

"Pardon?" Cane let out, extremely confused

She continued, now surprisingly serious, as if she didn't understand it either

"He said and I quote "in the name of the recovery of the members of the victim wing, who have been judged potentially capable of mental reparation and whose powers could be potentially controlled, the CRC has gifted this Estium collar to give patients the ability to leave the facility under protection and surveillance of both a squad of armed defense and their counselor"

"So, dates then" cane repeated, holding his head
