Chapter 16 - The mystics of Fantasy

Spellcraft theory.

The first thing a Mage will learn is Spellcrafting. Varying in complexity, Spells are like Skills but with more logical sense instead of practical sense. It uses the already generated principles of the world and bend them. Utilizing the abundant resource called Mana, existing both inside one person and outside in the air one breathes, they will be able to form a Magic Eye, a catalyst to bend the rules to their favor.

Magecraft theory

The second thing a Mage will learn is Magecrafting. It's your rituals, your construction, basically anything needing a resource that isn't solely Mana will be categorized as Magecraft. There is also the other version, which is Witchcraft, that stems from using materials with magical properties in a quick ritual, enchantment or in Spell chanting.

And finally, utilizing all of those simple theories, one can become a proper Mage that bends the rules like a ruffian, but more refined and gentleman-like.

But, since this will be too hard for one session, I'll use a different method.

"Alright, copy what I do exactly."

Outside in the grass hill, one that stretches seemingly to infinity with a blank white sky above, a middle-age man was standing just a few meters away from a boy with a very ominous smile on his face. He then raises his right arm, his index finger outstretched and a blue light appears at the tip of it.

"Visualize a blue colored energy at your fingertip."

Seichi follows, raising his left arm and doing as said.

'A blue colored energy…'

Seichi tries to imagine such an energy, but all he could do was imagine the color blue. Serene, calm, the color of the sky that he gazes at each day.

Seichi closes his eyes, slowing his breath to a calm rhythm like his mental image of the sky. He was able to do the same after a couple of seconds, impressing the middle-age man as he raised his right eyebrow.

"Alright, congratulations! Well done, very well done, my boy."

Seichi opened his eyes, and indeed he did see the glowing blue hue in front of his fingertip. It wasn't as powerful as the man's, but everyone starts somewhere.

"Now, start by forming a circle in the air, it can be big or small depending on your writing."

"Writing…?"

The man doesn't say anything else and forms a circle. Seichi followed his example and made his own.

"There are three key words I'd like you to remember for this first session of ours. Effect, Element, and Arcanum. I will guide you on how to use them, for now let's start with each of them as one."

The man explained while his fingertip moved in the air, writing something inside the circle.

"I'll teach you three simple Spells that's from each of the key words I just told you for our first lesson, call it a special beginner's service. I'd like you to write Effect for me please."

Seichi follows the verbal instruction and writes Effect within his circle.

"Now, write clear mind of any ailments, Cure.''

(Effect: Clear mind of all ailments, Cure)

He saw a glow on his circle and the words began to meld and form intricate markings and lines on the circle. After a few moments, the Magic Eye was formed as a green-colored one. Then, a notification pops up in front of him.

[You have created a Spell using the old Spellcrafting ways]

[You have created the Spell, Cure]

[21 EXP is rewarded for you successful recreation of the Spell]

''I will now inflict you with a Status ailment, use Cure afterwards to dispel the effects. Ready?"

"Ready."

Seichi prepares himself as he faces the man. He in turn points his palm towards Seichi, then a purple Magic Eye appears.

"Fear."

A purple wave-like phenomenon came out from the Magic eye, slithering rapidly through the air and then infected his mind.

"Argh!"

Seichi was overwhelmed with the effects, and the man screamed at him to amplify the effects even more.

"Fight! Use the Spell!"

His words were still understandable for Seichi. He trembles as he casts his own Spell, Cure.

"C…ur…e."

After much difficulty, the green Magic Eye appeared in front of his forehead and a purple smog exploded from his head. He gasped for air rapidly, his heart pumping so quickly that he could audibly hear it in his mind.

"Good show, very good show! Now, onto the next Spell."

Seichi gets a grip of himself quickly, recovering from his disorientation and stands straight again.

"Form a circle. Write Element: Form a flame to dispel my rage, Firelight."

(Element: Form a flame to dispel my rage, Firelight)

The words proceed to meld into the glowing circle, then it bursts into flame as it continues to form a Magic Eye.

[You have successfully recreated the Spell, Firelight]

[28 EXP is rewarded]

"For our experiment, I will make a wall out of wood. Use Firelight to burn it down."

A brown green Magic Eye appears in front of the man's palm, and from the ground rose a wall made entirely out of intertwining roots.

Seichi gives it a second, and then gathers his Mana to cast the first offensive Spell of his.

"Firelight!"

He shouted, for whatever reason. A small ball of flame was hurled from a red Magic Eye that had some flame on the rim. The flame burned the wall a little, starting a small fire on it before withering to nothingness. It was a very strange scene, as fire when started on a flammable object wouldn't outright wither as quickly as that. It was because of Seichi's Intelligence that he noticed this fact.

'.....Something related to Magic?'

The wall of roots shrunk back into the ground. The man behind was smiling widely, nodding several times to himself and then continuing speaking.

"Now, about the last keyword, I'll explain something to you beforehand to avoid some complications later on. Arcanum is a special keyword related to Mana control, meaning if you don't form a coherent sentence then the cost of Mana will be ridiculous. The Spell I'm about to teach you is the most basic, and you can enhance it however you like once you learn it. Is that clear?"

Seichi listens intently at the man's explanation with a focused mind. Once he understood all of it, he nodded his head to confirm.

"Alright, now, Arcanum: Manifest the might of Mana, Magic Missile."

(Arcanum: Manifest the might of Mana, Magic Missile)

The words meld into the circle around it and a bright blue light, almost blinding, exploded from the completion of the process.

[You have recreated the Spell, Magic Missile]

[27 EXP is rewarded]

"And that's it. Our first session will stop here. Test out your Magic Missiles when you have the chance and now leave."

He raises his hand up quickly and the door that Seichi came in from appeared behind. The latter turns around to the sound as it opens, and then the man forms a gray Magic Eye in front of his palm.

"See ya later, Chosen Undead."

A burst of wind violently hit the back of Seichi, who didn't respond well and went through the door face first onto the ground.

......

"Uhmmm…"

Back in the real world, Brynhild awoke from her comfortable sleep and the first thing she felt was the embrace she's in.

'...!!!!'

Her face flushed an intense, ripe tomato color as she tried to contain her flustered scream inside her mouth.

"Oh, seems like princess is awake. Did you get a good sleep with your man?"

"Assassin, give the girl a rest."

"She already got one, and a good one at that."

Assassin was the usual, teasing Brynhild as soon as she woke up, while Paladin came to her defense by warding Assasin off.

"......."

Brynhild's breathing was slowly getting out of control, and so was her Love for Seichi.

'Calm down… no, no no no no, please heart, calm down!'

And then, Seichi let out a groan as he opened his eyes slowly.

"Ahaaa…''

He took a few seconds, until he snuggled up near to her ear and whispered into it.

"Are you awake, Maiden Brynhild?"

"....!!! Y-Y-Y-Y-Yes!"

Her voice was louder, loud enough to attract the attention of Paladin as she sat up from her bed.

"Oh… then I'll let you go now."

His voice had a tinge of regret for some reason, but he let go of his embrace and Brynhild immediately stood up from the bed, both hands hugging each side of her cheeks.

'....Maybe it's a little bit too much.'

Seichi, due to his newly formed common sense(?), began to suspect that Brynhild didn't like what he did. He made a mental note of that and got up himself.

''How long did we sleep?"

"About… 9 hours? It's midday right now. You probably have a dozen or so more minutes until Agnes returns to find you."

Assassin responded while looking back down to her book.

'Minutes…'

He recalls the things the middle-age man said. He recalls his new knowledge and the introduction to Magic. And finally he recalls that he still hasn't tested out Magic Missile.

'Let's go outside… should I take Brynhild?'

Now, Seichi was getting more and more aware of Brynhild, aside from her being his Maiden, someone he needed to protect, she was also a female, the opposite sex of him. Aside from protection, he also sees her as a woman.

'...No, I said that she must be with me at all times.'

He recalled what he said, so abandoning her here would mean he broke his words.

"Brynhild, I need to go outside for a bit. Will you accompany me?"

"O-Of course, l-let's go."

Assassin glances over with a raised eyebrow, while Paladin gaze at the pair with a lonely glint in her eyes.

They head out of the dormitory and towards where Seichi was practicing last time yesterday.

......…

Magic Missile is the most basic Arcanum Spell one can learn. After putting some hard work in memorizing formulas and how the Magic Eye is formed, they can begin modifying it with more lines or experiment with Elemental Symbols.

But, Seichi's method that he was taught is based on a very old way of discovering and creating Spells. It's similar to code writing on a computer, the correct input will provide an effective Spell, while an incorrect one will provide at least a faulty and unpredictable Spell.

Seichi was at the training site, Brynhild sitting under the tree shade while Seichi fiddled with the Spell Circle a couple of steps away.

(Arcanum: Manifest the might of Mana, Magic Missile)

(Element: Form a flame to dispel my rage, Firelight)

[A Spell fusion is triggered]

[Spell fusion is successful]

[You have created the Spell, Fire Missile]

(Elemental Arcanum: Manifest the might of Mana, form a flame to dispel my rage, Fire Missile)

It was a very good synergy, both of which were offensive Spells and one of them is a neutral medium. The fusion was successful for those two reasons.

'Now… what about Cure.'

He opens the Spell, defusing the lines into words he wrote.

(Effect: Clear mind of all ailments, Cure)

(Effect: Spread to the air)

[Attempting to remodel the Spell, Cure]

[Attempting to fuse the additional Effect line]

[Fusion result is partially complete]

[The Spell, Cure All (Defective), has been created]

(Effect: Clear mind of all ailment, spread to the air, Cure All)

The result wasn't very good to his eyes. A defective product, unfit to his eyes. So, in another attempt, Seichi rewrites the Spell again.

(Effect: Clear mind of all ailment, spread my kindness to all that wishes for it, Cure All)

[Remodeling the Spell, Cure All]

[Re-evaluating the Spell, Cure All]

[Remodeling complete, Cure All is now complete]

[36 EXP is rewarded]

An additional EXP reward was given. Seichi noticed this, and was reminded that Fire Missile's fusion didn't result in an EXP reward.

'Hmmm… maybe it depends on its difficulty?'

He reaches a conclusion that's understandable to him.

'Now… should I create a new Spell?'

Right now, the fusion options were spent, and the fused ones shouldn't really be meddled anymore than is. But then, another option of interest popped in his mind.

(Elemental Function: Form a gust of wind that guides my feet, boost me higher to reach the sky where all wind meets, Air Dash)

He opened the Spell Air Dash. The first thing that caught his attention was the Keyword, Elemental Function.

'Hmm…'

He closes the Spell up and attempts a new Spellcraft using the new supposed Keyword.

(Function: Float objects, Fly)

The very simple wording immediately began disappearing once he stopped writing. It didn't activate a Spellcraft sequence, so he thought it was a failure. The system also notified him of that.

[Spellcrafting incomplete]

'Incomplete…'

The words must've been too simple. It didn't say it was wrong outright, but it said it was incomplete. This intrigued Seichi to attempt it again, this time using a longer and more eloquent wording.

(Function: Float the object of my desire, Fly)

[Spellcrafting incomplete]

(Function: Make my target fly, Float)

[Spellcrafting incomplete]

(Function: Give me wind's grace, Fly)

[Spellcrafting incomplete]

Three attempts at getting something, but all three were incomplete and discarded. He was puzzled, since all three of them were very reasonable wordings to him. He tried and tried and tried, he should've at least gotten something, anything, but no, the system was still saying it was incomplete.

'Maybe… it's supposed to be paired with another Keyword?'

This thought made him rethink his approach. He saw it with another Keyword to form Elemental Function, so what if he also did the same.

(Elemental Function: Give me wings to soar through the sky, Liberate me from the bondage of Earth, Fly)

[Spellcrafting sequence matches with database]

Then, it responded with a different window than the rest.

[Spellcrafting sequence confirmed match]

[Spellcrafting sequence matches 20% of the recorded perfected sequence]

[Spellcrafting in process]

The words melded and formed a light blue Magic Eye with a noticeable key difference to his other Spells. A wing symbol was etched into the middle of the Eye.

[You have successfully recreated 20% of the Spell, Fly]

[A tier 5 Spell has been detected within the second floor]

[A God has noticed your surprising achievement]

[A God has begun clamoring with excitement at your incredible feat]

[A God is shocked with your achievement]

[You have earned a Title, God's Object of Interest]

[Your Title is being rejected by the Class, Chosen Undead]

[Your Title has been transformed into the Title, Obscured Being]

{Several Gods have begun noticing you!}

[A wise machine is happy with your amazing revelation]

[A wise machine wishes for your success]

{Fly}

[Spell Tier: 5]

[Spell Complexity: 3]

[Spell Effect: Give the caster intangible wings that grant freedom to soar the skies]

[Spell Consumption: 70 MP/s]

Checking the Spell's effect, he was delighted but also flustered at the same time. The Spell's tier, something he'd checked with the other Spells, was the highest amongst his Spells. But, it was also at a very steep consumption rate.

"Seventy per second… I'll need to level up my Magic to a ridiculous degree if I want to properly utilize it."

Currently, his Magic is only matching his Level, 17. Multiply it by 3 then it'll be 41. It's not enough to even activate the Spell let alone sustain it.

'Maybe I should convert some of my other Stats to Magic…?'

He thought of being greedy. His Strength was at the limit of the floor now, he can't grow any further by assigning Stat Points to it, only Leveling up would increase it over the allowed point now.

'...Yeah, I think I'll convert some of my Strength to Magic for now.'

[Activating Your Flame]

[Converting 11 Strength values to Magic values]

[A threshold has been reached]

[Your Magic Circuit is being fried due to sudden overload]

An alarming window appeared at the end, and then he felt his body lose control and collapsed.

"Seichi?!"

......…

[A meeting with someone has been arranged]

During the blackout, I arranged a meeting with the Chosen Undead, my old familiar.

'Let's see your second incarnation, dear Nameless.'

I am the Light, the Eternal Flame that once fueled a Nameless on his journey to reach the top.

'You've done something very admirable, second incarnation.'

I am Sariel Goldheart, Giver of Light, Flame, and the Morning Star.

[Meeting is starting]

Finally, in my domain of light, I am finally reunited with you in a new form.

......…

'I…'

In front of me, a grand visage of a towering woman stood tall as she cast a shadow down to me. This woman spreads warmth, but somehow my heart is cold and rejects her.

"Greetings, old familiar."

[Activating Dark Heart]

[Rejecting the Light Presence]
