Chapter 4 - 4. Silver Fox

Second Master Leng and his wife returned to their courtyard, and there was a sense of dejection in their footsteps. Even their gazes toward their daughter carried a hint of helplessness. Over the years, the Leng family had held a great deal of reverence for Old Master Leng. Even Leng Yan, the most esteemed grandson in the family, didn't dare to contradict the Old Master in the slightest. However, just now, their daughter had dared to bring up conditions in front of him. What's more surprising was… it seemed to have worked!

"Yue… Yue'er." Second Old Master stared at his daughter with a dazed expression. It was only after a discreet pinch by Second Madam that he regained his senses and cleared his throat. He coughed lightly. "Yue'er, why did you agree? This matter concerns your entire life. You, let me think of a way…"

"Father," Leng Sa shook her head. "What options do you have? Do you think you can take me, Mom, and Lil' Feng and leave the Leng family? We'd have to leave not only the Leng family but also Yong City. Maybe even… the Six Southern Provinces."

Second Master Leng hung his head weakly. "It's all Father's fault for lacking the ability."

Second Madam Leng held her daughter's wrist, her eyes reddened as she sobbed. "Who doesn't know what happened with First Young Master Fu? It's too aggrieved for you to marry into that family!" Even if it were only for a couple of years, in the end, her daughter would have to venture far away. Who knows if they would ever see each other again in their lifetimes? She couldn't help but cry out, "Who did we provoke? It wasn't our family who begged them for the engagement back then. Even if it's the Warlord's family… this is just too much of a bully!"

Leng Sa sighed softly, patting her mother's back. "Mother, don't worry. In a way… this might not be all bad."

"How could it be a good thing?"

Leng Sa said, "Even if we break off this engagement with the Fu family now, do you know which family Grandfather will marry me off to instead? Even if you disagree, these issues will still persist. On the other hand, with the Fu family… if I can get along peacefully with First Young Master Fu, then no one can bully me as First Young Madam Fu. Or as Warlord Fu suggested, give it a couple of years and arrange a scenario where First Young Madam Fu passes away due to illness. Then I can leave Yong City without any obstacles. By then… Lil' Feng should have grown up."

"But your lifetime…" The Second Madam Leng frowned. She thought that her daughter was still young and unaware of these matters. How could a woman waste her life like this?

Leng Sa chuckled, "What lifetime? Mother, I'm not even turning 18 for another six months. I'll only be 23 in five years, let alone in two to three years. I have hands, feet, education, and money. How can I not support myself? Besides, will Lil' Feng not care about me when he grows up? Just now, I already discussed it with Grandfather. In the latter half of the year, we'll send Lil' Feng to the city's middle school. Although he still learns things at a private school, it's better in a regular school. Also, Father, consider what you want to do with the assets promised to you by Grandfather. If… you don't want to manage them, you should find a proper job. I can understand Grandfather to some extent. The entire burden of the Leng family falls on his shoulders. He's nearly 70 years old; how long can he last?"

Second Master Leng felt ashamed, "Yue'er is right. It's all because I'm not capable… rest assured, I will do my best in the future and guide your younger brother well. Even if something happens to you in the future… you'll still have me and your younger brother."

Leng Sa smiled, "Good, once the property deed comes through, Father, take your time to think about it. I can also offer some advice." In fact, over the past two years, she had given suggestions, but her father had been accustomed to his ways for half a lifetime. Unless circumstances forced him to change, he would just brush aside her words with a smile.

Now that he realized that he could not even protect his daughter, he finally understood the pain.

Leng Sa didn't blame her parents. This was a time of transition, a time when some moved forward while others remained stagnant, left behind by the changing times. The Leng family belonged to the latter, holding onto past glories with the Emperor's teacher's reputation. Second Master Leng was the second son of the Leng family, not in line to inherit the family business, and had never lacked for anything. Furthermore, he had a strict and arbitrary father. Naturally, he developed this kind of personality. He was mild-mannered, with a good temper, and treated his wife and children well, which was a blessing.

Madam Leng tugged at her handkerchief, her eyes red as she gritted her teeth, "Don't worry, Yue'er. I will take care of your dowry properly!" She looked like she wanted to tear off a piece of flesh from the Leng family for her daughter.

Leng Sa said, "I already managed to get quite a lot from Grandfather just now. Mother, take it easy." After all, not stopping her mother entirely would also provide her mother an outlet for venting her frustrations.

Second Master Leng looked at Leng Sa and couldn't help but say hesitantly, "Why did the Fourth Young Master Fu cause such uproar after doing such a thing? Even if the Zheng family's daughter got pregnant, it wasn't impossible to secretly cancel the engagement. How did it suddenly become known to the entire city? Although her reputation will be damaged no matter what, there are varying degrees of severity, right?"

Leng Sa smiled, "Well… it's probably because he offended someone. He wouldn't have spread it himself."

"Who could hold such a deep grudge?" Second Madam Leng wasn't sure whether to take pleasure in someone else's misfortune or blame the person behind the scenes. If it weren't for the sudden outbreak of news about Zheng Ying's pregnancy, who knew what disgusting things the Fourth Young Master Fu would do to break off the engagement? They hadn't been prepared for this situation, and now it seemed that her daughter marrying the eldest young master of the Fu family wasn't much better than being broken off.

Leng Sa shrugged, "Who knows? He should have been beaten up a long time ago with that temper of his."

Both Second Master Leng and Madam exchanged glances as they looked at their daughter. They both thought, "Yu'er has been provoked a lot. This temper… having some temper is good; it makes her harder to be bullied!"

Leng Sa came out of her parents' room and strolled along the winding corridor. She vaguely sensed a few gazes that seemed to carry sympathy and pity directed at her.

Leng Sa looked up at the sky beyond the eaves and smiled faintly.

In reality, it wasn't necessary.

She was not the real Leng Mingyue. Three years ago, shortly after the engagement Leng Mingyue accidentally fell into the water.

When Leng Mingyue woke up after being rescued, she had become Leng Sa.

She was Leng Sa, the Silver Fox of fox den, a special operations group within the National Security Special Operations. She remembered that she and Lan Meng had been trapped while trying to save Blood Fox and White Fox. In the end, the two of them had been sent into the sky by Blue Fox along with the monsters in the warehouse. After waking up, she had become the recently fallen Leng Mingyue. She was sure that she and Lan Meng couldn't have survived. Hopefully, those two were safe.

Among the five girls in the fox den, Leng Sa's background was the most ordinary.

Not because she wasn't good enough, but because she was the most normal.

Green Fox was an orphan, boasting about how she was brought in from the streets by the leader herself. She had been a little tyrant since childhood. Blood Fox came from a military background; her family had generations of service in the military, a family with a clean and strong heritage. The Blue Fox family were all research elites, though it was a mystery how a family full of high IQ individuals produced a simple-minded single-celled organism. Perhaps that's the manifestation of the law of diminishing returns. However, Blue Fox was a genius in certain aspects, worthy of the Blue family's genes. For a while, Green Fox had believed that the reason for Lan Meng's split personality was because she had undergone genetic modification by her family of research elites.

As for the White Fox, it was said to be a direct descendant of a Xuan Men family, an ancestral charlatan.

In comparison, Leng Sa's mother was a businesswoman, her father a university professor; Leng Sa was considered a wealthy second-generation heiress.

Every rich second-generation heir had a chuunibyou dream when they were young, and Leng Sa did not grow up according to her parents' plans either.

From a young age, she possessed extraordinary hearing and vision. During high school military training, she could easily hit bullseyes and perfect tens in marksmanship. In her second year of high school, the instructor came looking for her. Leng Sa followed her without much thought. They often said that the Silver Fox was aloof, but that wasn't entirely true. She was simply not interested in most things or people.

Once she entered the training camp, the abundance of gifted individuals around her piqued Leng Sa's interest. However, being a sniper meant she was often alone during training and missions. Sometimes, she'd spend an entire day lying in the wilderness all by herself. The first time she returned home from the camp, her parents thought she had developed a language disorder or become autistic. They were so worried they wanted to get her a psychologist.

Leng Sa didn't know why the once normal world became inexplicably strange, but she believed she had done everything she could. Even if she died, her conscience was clear. Her only regret was causing her parents grief; luckily, she had a little brother. She hoped that the charlatan could save the world, and they could live in peace.

Leng Sa was still very happy to be reborn. After all, even if she was a chuunibyou, she hadn't grown tired of living yet.

Although Second Master Leng and Madam were somewhat weak and lacked abilities, they genuinely loved their children. Leng Feng was still young, but he was much more well-behaved compared to her little brother Xiong. Over the past three years, a genuine sense of family affection had grown between them.

As for marrying the First or Fourth Young Master of the Fu family, it didn't make a big difference to her.

She didn't have ambitions to dominate the world or to become the envy of all women, standing above them, making them jealous and envious.

Wasn't it just about living a life? Why over complicate it?

The difference was… it's immoral to harm disabled. Sigh, what a hassle.
