I sighed heavily as I composed the text message as a response to the compensatory sum of money he had sent.
In a way, I understood what he said but I knew I would need to choose my words carefully just so that he wouldn't think I had taken his words in the way he hadn't meant.
"You there?"
My phone beeped, this message coming in to follow the one he had previously sent.
"Thank you so much. Uhm, I don't need you to feel so sorry that you had to send me money to, as you said, "kind of compensate" me for everything you've put me through. I don't need it but I still appreciate the fact that you genuinely feel sorry."
A moment later, he replied, "Oh thank God, you see it this way. I was so afraid that you would misunderstand me and think that I was trying to buy your forgiveness. As you know, I do have feelings for you and that's not going to change anytime soon."
I didn't know I needed his constant reassurance until he began to do it.
