"Happy birthday, Mariam!" Emmanuel, me, our classmates from secondary school, and her friends from Unilag, yelled in unison as she blew out the candles on her chocolate cake.
I had nearly forgotten that May 6th was her eighteenth birthday, she was actually turning eighteen before me, and yet, I looked older than her.
It had taken a Facebook notification to pull me out of the slump I was in due to boredom and remind me of my best friend's birthday.
"So...what did you wish for?" I asked, nudging her shoulder teasingly.
"Come on, you know the rules, if I told you or anyone, then it wouldn't come true!" She replied, flicking a finger at my forehead.
"Hey!" I squealed, rubbing the painful spot on my forehead gently.
"Thank you for coming by the way. I know things have been really difficult in your house, so it means the world to me that you are here," She smiled softly, pulling my left cheek gently.
