Not to mention, he was sure that a good portion of them had to be children. They were the one thing he couldn't stand to see. If he had a weak point, children would definitely be it, so he refused to walk through something that would screw with his mind. He didn't think that it made him weak. In fact, to him, it was better to acknowledge your shortcomings rather than put on a show for others. After all, the person who would suffer the most would definitely be him.
What baffled him, however, was why there would be a massacre in the middle of nowhere? Where did all these thousands of people come from? Were they brought here or did they come by themselves? If so, what was the reason? What even happened to them to cause this? He had so many questions. He was a firm believer in minding one's own business, but in a case like this, he couldn't help but want to know. He simply couldn't understand what could cause this kind of devastation.
