Chapter 2 - 2 - Genesis Chronicles - (1)

I lifted the pickaxe and brought it down with force enough to chip a big piece of rock revealing the purple ore beneath.

The sound of metal striking rock seemed to blend into a sound of harmony and I struck at the rock again with fervor to mix my beat in the melody.

The heat from the sun left my back glistening in sweat even as the cold breeze gave me relief from the cruel warden that was the blazing yellow star.

My small hands grasped tight the handle and my eyes beheld the multitude of men grabbed in rags working as mindless slaves. Not that I was any different, No, I was. I knew it.

The sun settled behind the horizon and the moon took its place. We were handed out rations that consisted of hard bread and some rotten fruits to replenish our energy so that we can continue to mine for them like the slaves we were.

I found a secluded spot away from the masses and silently nibbled at my meal. A thought came to me and I stared blankly at the inky black sky dotted with blinking stars and a silver moon.

A presence. A whisper from the wind and I looked behind me to see the stunned face of a young girl no more than seven or eight years old.

"You scared me." The girl, my sister said as she sat beside me.

"Why are you here?"

"I was looking for you." Her answer made me frown even though I had refrained her from coming near me. She had her work cut for her, so I didn't want her anywhere near me or other men for that matter.

"I brought you this." She took out a round-shaped brown fruit-looking thing from her inner pocket. I had no idea what it was but I could tell that it was her food.

"That's yours, I have my own, I don't need it." Even though I refused her, my sister took the hard bread from my hands and handed me that weird-looking fruit or was it something else? Don't know, don't care.

"You have been eating this thing for weeks now, at least today, eat this. Please." Her pleading eyes finally made me resign and I acquiesced.

"I will take half, don't refuse otherwise I won't accept anything." How could I let my younger sister even though only by a year eat that dirt called food while I feast on this delicacy.

It took a lot of effort but eventually, she agreed and I smiled. I promised myself that I will change our lives and get us out of here.

I promise.

I promise.

...I promised?

So why? Why did it happen? Was my conviction and resolve nothing more than a joke in the eyes of the Heavens?

My eyes beheld the scene of death that was the bodies shredded into pieces, blood splattered on the rocks, and innards lying all around.

My eyes drifted back to the face of the young girl I held in my embrace, her face marred by dust and red. A warm and wet feeling made me look at her abdomen that gushed with dark red blood even as her eyes were glazed over and her body was turning cold.

I hated it, I hated myself for being so weak, and I hated this world and all those who lived here. So why, even as I felt the soul-burning agony, my heart being pierced, why was my face so emotionless? I didn't cry, not a single drop of tear.

My right squeezed the pickaxe by my side and I looked to my left. The humans who used to be our master's being slaughtered in droves as the beats pushed through.

I laid my sister down and closed her eyes. A rush of energy ran through my body and I felt strength course through my bones and muscles.

I tightened the grip on my weapon and burst forth with a speed that left a trail of dust in my wake.

My weapon cut through the air and hit the head of my enemy—a humanoid wolf-like creature—and my body was bathed in the gore and brain matter of my enemy and I relished the feeling that coursed through my body.

The night was going to be a long one.

A/N: Yosh~! I feel the need to clarify, so, to avoid the confusion read this note.

First of all, that was not MC. Yup, you heard me right, that was not MC. MC will appear in the next chapter. Genesis Chronicles is part of the story but will only appear every twenty, thirty, or fifty chapters. It might be a bit confusing to you but please read this. Even though skipping this won't have any substantial effect on the story, I still recommend reading it. Another thing to note, this novel is in 3rd person perspective, save for the Genesis Chronicles which will all be in 1st person POV. That's all, enjoy!
