Chapter 23 - Invisible Force

The creaking sound of the wooden stairs echoed in the hallways no matter how quiet I tried to walk,

to the point I believed even he could hear it.

I truly felt terrified as cold sweat ran down my spine making my hands shake more.

Looking up I was overwhelmed

'at this rate I should get to the top by tomorrow morning'

I don't know if that thought was comforting or more unsettling, probably the latter.

'Why would you even need these many stairs in the first place?'

amidst all of this the feeling of frustration was adding to the pressure building at the back of my head and the lack of food and dehydration wasn't helping my headache at all.

Upon reaching the top a sudden wave of dizziness made me stumble backwards as my foot slipped off the last stair.

I hurriedly reached out with a hand as I tried to grab onto the railing, but my hand came back empty, it was too late.

I could already feel the rush of cold air hitting my face harshly as I closed my eyes already accepting my fate as I weakly voiced a final prayer

"please don't let me die".

While I squeezed my eyes tightly closed, I felt a drop of tear run down my face.

I couldn't even imagine the pain I would feel as my body would hit the hard floor.

If I didn't immediately die, then I would be in immense for long amount of time.

Then as if by some miracle and just when I was about to pass out,

I suddenly felt my hand come into contact with something before I was pulled back by a very strong force,

something inhuman.

Falling forward with a thud I quickly opened my eyes,

half expecting to see something in front of me but again I seemed to be all alone.

I felt lightheaded and unable to process what had just happened to me as I stood up.

"I was standing here" I pointed to a place

"and fell off here"

my voice came out shaky and almost inaudible, even to my own ears.

"I definitely fell off the stairs"

I looked over the railing at the ground underneath

"but I didn't?"

As I took deep breaths I looked down at my hand,

"what was that?"

I was sure that my hand came into contact with something, but it didn't feel quite solid.

Closing my eyes,

I tried to remember the feeling as I waved my hand in the air

"it definitely wasn't air"

I finally concluded.

I frowned as I looked around me in order to find something with that description

"What were you?"

All of a sudden,

I heard a loud crash in the distance and my heart jumped to my throat

"I swear I'll have a heart attack today"

I placed a hand on my heart.

Finally able to notice my surroundings I walked further into a wide hallway with many doors looking for the source of the sound.

It seemed that candles and thick curtains framing large windows were a recurring theme in this place.

"Who did this place belong to anyways, a vampire?"

I would've spent more time criticizing the odd interior design if the reality of my situation wasn't looming over my head like an omen of death.

Upon reaching the final door at the end of the hallway I placed my ear to the door,

listening,

and held a hand over my mouth in order to muffle the sound of my breathing.

This was also the moment when I realized that I had dropped the knife somewhere in my long journey from downstairs to here.

"I'm screwed" I looked around scratching my head "or maybe not".

I grabbed the candle holder to my right as I took a deep breath and pushed the door open.
