While Chief Examiner Evans Graham frantically contacted the Imperial Court for support, he also had to do something to avoid appearing incompetent and lazy. He yelled loudly, "Bring forth the person who came out to be questioned!"
Owen Bertram was summoned, and Evans, in a particularly bad mood, inevitably took a nasty tone: "Out of thirty thousand people, why are you the only one to come out?"
Owen was somewhat puzzled: "Are you interrogating me, sir?"
Evans became more impatient and snarled: "You must explain yourself! Why are you the only one to come out of the Short-lived Valley?"
