As hard as it was to not threaten the old man's life, Jayce tried to appear as friendly as possible.
If the contract went through, that meant rule C was applied from a party's state of mind. If they felt like they had no choice but to sign it, it would destroy the contract.
Instead, if the contract went up in flames, that meant the rule was being enforced by the system, which would be the worst-case scenario.
It would make it nearly impossible to get anyone to sign a contract without triggering the third rule if it was from the system's perspective.
He could trick people into signing but there was no possible way he would be able to trick the system.
