"You sure you want to have this party? I mean, it's not compulsory o. You are just turning twenty."
"Yes Chi, I want to do this. If turning twenty isn't gold for you, it is for me. I want to remember it forever. Besides, twenty marks the beginning of adulthood. Infact its a must now. Nothing can change my mind." I said haughtily.
"Okay oo, if you insist. Soo...who and who are you inviting?"
"Wasn't it you that was just discouraging me a minute ago? All of a sudden you are hyped up." I said chuckling a little. My best friend could be unbelievable.
"Come on! I was just being considerate. You know it might take alot of time and energy." Chi replied, rolling her eyes, while simultaneously twirling her straw in her pineapple blast, a drink I thought tasted like water and sugar mixed together.
"There you go again. I don't have to worry about that. My parents have already promised to take care of it."
"You mean they are actually cool with you about having this party?" Chi asked, her right eyebrow raised in doubt.
"Sure." I said with a shrug. "What are parents for?" I added taking a sip of my cherry cordial which was my best drinks at Sugar and Spice, our go-to restaurant and hangout spot.
"Abeg let's drop that one rich girl. Like I said who and who are you inviting?" Chi asked feigning annoyance.
"Okay..you for sure my guest of honor, Benita and Funmilayo, some of our friends, classmates from secondary school..."I said counting my fingers. "Too much?" I looked up to ask Chi, then proceeded to guffaw at the horrified expression on her face.
"You got to be kidding me! That's a whole lot of people! Where are you going to hold it!?" She said cocking a brow while taking a sip of her pineapple blast.
I took a minute to study her. She was attractive without being beautiful. Chi was tall, skinny and elegant with relaxed hair that fell well past her shoulders, and to top it all off, deep brown eyes. Although she and I have been best friends since Junior Secondary one, we were utterly different in our appearances. I was a little bit plumply but not fat (no not all), on the short side being five foot six, had natural full kinky hair and pure black eyes.
When we walked together we contrasted, but when people got to know us more, they got to know that to us, our appearances didn't matter. There were better things for us to be concerned with.
I was still deep in thought when Chichi snapped me back to the present with her fingers.
"Hello? I asked a question y'know. Where is it holding?" She elaborated.
I smiled and said, "Well, I have rented a place at that fancy hotel..what's the name again? It's close to Genesis Cinemas."
"OMG!" Chi exclaimed, her eyes wide open. "You mean Spring Falls!?"
"Ehehen! That's it. The hall was a bit on the high side, but like I said before, my parents intervened and took care of it. The manager was pretty reluctant to rent it out to me, but when my parents flashed the cash, he let it go. Ego na king."
"Oh, I almost forgot..after the main event at the hotel, I'm still going to invite some of our very close friends over to my house where we are going to party until midnight. Whohoo!!!"
"Oh my Gosh! An after party? Okay I'm dropping the concerns. I'm IN!" She gushed, humming 'Party after party' by Big Trill.
I giggled and then told her that we needed to eat our food quickly so that we could go catch a movie. She nodded and then suddenly remembered..
"Girl one more thing.."
"Umhm?" I said with food in my mouth.
"What's the date? Is it on your birthday or after?"
I took a second to swallow my food and then said, "I wanted to do it on my birthday, but now, I think it would be better to have it on a weekend because y'know, people will come over and stuff. I might just go out and eat with my family on my birthday, but the real celebration would be on that weekend."
"Soo..what's your birthday date?" Chioma asked with a devious smirk on her face.
"Ohhh what a wonderful friend you are." I answered sarcastically, while rolling my eyes.
Chi just laughed, almost choking on her drink.
"Well, it can't be on the sixteenth of February which is my birthday date, because it's a week day we'd all be busy and stuff, so I'll just leave it till the nineteenth, a Saturday. That's when the funk's coming in!"
"That's great girl!" said Chi, high-fiving me.
We ate our food quickly and went to Cinemas and decided to view Captain Marvel starring Brie Lawson. I'm a die-hard MCU fan, Chi's DC but she screened with me anyway, as there were no DC films at the moment. Throughout the movie, while we stuffed our faces with popcorn, we kept gushing about how pretty Brie was and how Jude Law was killing his role.
The movie was awesome.
