Chapter 52 - Foretelling

Clack. The blades of his sword rebounded off the snake's scales. It was hard to even scratch the scales. How was even jabbing into it possible? How did Zane do it?

Kai continued on hacking at the scales, hoping to get a lucky shot in. He felt his whole body burning up but he didn't stop. He had managed to grab the snake's attention with his consistent poking.

It got Ophelia and Anne some time to come up with something new while waiting for Zane to wake up from his slumber and recover for a bit.

The most Kai could do was make a deep scratch into the scales with his sword. He zoomed around as fast as light. Not sparing any time for the snake to react.

If he did, he'll probably end up in the same state as Zane.

The snake swung it''s tail and body, trying to get rid of the pest. Hitting the walls of the wood while the whole forest shook and the ground became unstable. It felt exactly like an earthquake.

Walking on the ground became dangerous. With each step, they had to mind their steps and the snake that was wriggling relentlessly.

Suddenly the snake stopped. It opened its mouth to the biggest size it could manage. It was big enough to swallow up a whole estate.

White gas started vaporising from the interior of the snake's mouth. It filled up the whole area, covering the whole land with opaque smoke.

"Cover your mouth and nose Ophelia." Anne said, tearing a piece of her pants and trying it over her face. "And wake Zane up."

"What about you!?" Ophelia yelled, the smoke blowing through her hair as if it was a strong gust of wind. Holding tightly onto her wand as she could feel it vanish any moment now. She squinted as she attempted to look at where the light was.

"Just go! I'll work something out with Kai!" Anne urged, placing one hand over her face while she held her breath every time the incoming smoke breezed through.

Kai heard his name and stopped whatever he was doing. He was obviously not doing much besides distracting and annoying the heavens out of the snake. His electric shocks didn't seem to work on it either.

Quickly, Anne sharpened the tip of her arrow with the bottom of her shoes that had a small block of metal at the heel. "Kai! Use your sword and force the mouth of the snake to stay open!" She yelled at the top of her lungs when the smoke was gone. She had to do it before it reappeared again.

Kai frowned and looked at the sword in his hands. Was Anne trying to kill him? Going so close to the snake's mouth while it was releasing an unknown gas that could potentially be the lethal poison that it produced? He gripped his sword tighter.

He looked at what Anne was doing and saw that she had planned something out already. He gulped and stared at the huge monster that towered over him, wrecking everything that was in it's way.

"Hurry!" Anne yelled, getting mad at how things weren't going her way.

Kai swung his sword and took a step in front. He lowered himself and waited in a corner. He felt electricity spiking at his legs while sizzling it's way up.

The moment the snake's mouth moved, revealing the interior of it's horrifying mouth that could swallow anyone up in an instant.

Kai dashed and disappeared into thin air, leaving small traces of electricity behind. He went at his fastest speed and didn't look back. He felt his hand touching the fangs of the snake.

It was cold and unpleasant. He stabbed his sword into the open flesh of the snake's mouth and pushed it in deeper. He could see the smoke arising yet again with a petrifying hiss.

The leaves of the tree shook and wailed in horror with the rustles of its leaves. The gate that was once opened slammed shut.

Anne released her arrow that was fueled with fire, she couldn't miss. Not now. Now when the target was so clear.

The snake's mouth couldn't close at all with the sword jabbed into its throat. It released it's fill of smoke but little to nothing came out. The blade that was stuck into its mouth was blocking the gateway.

It swung its body back and forth and rocked side to side in pain as it attempted to crush the blade in its mouth. It hissed in pain while locating who had done the damage to it. It located a brown haired woman who was lowering her bow.

The next moment, it felt it's internal organs on fire while it's throat flared up in flames. It coughed and hissed and successfully managed to crush the blade with pure pressure.

It slithered it's way towards Anne with great speed and opened its mouth fearlessly, not learning from it's last lesson.

It opened up to its fullest size and chomped on the woman.

Time seemed to stop for Anne. Was this her time? In books and poems she had read, people's sense of time always seemed to slow down on their last breath.

She saw her hand reaching out of a dark red tunnel blocked by a large pair of fangs that seeped into her arm. She could slowly feel the pain hitting her.

Did she let her greed and desire for revenge overwhelm her need to succeed this mission?

She thought the kid was going to die when he made the attempt to stick the sword in here. That was the plan. So why..was she the one going down?

The disgusting feeling of the mouth walls were icky. And it reminded her exactly of when they were going through that suspicious tunnel.

Was it foretelling of the future events? A warning.

And at that moment what caught her attention the most was Kai who stood far ahead. Sitting down, breathing heavily while he rubbed at his arm.

It was as if he could also see all of this chaos happening in slow motion like Anne did. She yelled and screamed for help to get his attention.

And it did. It worked.

He looked up and looked at her with his jewel-like eyes that shone with malevolence. His eyes shaped into a crescent while his lips formed into a smile. He raised his hand and waved goodbye.

Anne saw the end of her road.
