'Wait, how did we get to the point that I need this?' Theo thought to himself as he looked at the robed man in front of him.
"We were concerned nobody would take the job, so we're actually rather thankful that you did." John said as he sighed in relief. Kendra nodded in agreement.
"Ah, no need to worry, I operate under the idea that children should learn magic as early as possible!" The robed man said.
'It's been three weeks...' Theo thought to himself.
(Three days ago)
"Y-you already know that chant too!?" Kendra asked after Theo used the chant for earth ball. Theo nodded. "How much do you know?" She asked.
'Most of what you've taught Sydney..." Theo said hesitantly.
"That..." Kendra said as she paused with a conflicted expression. "Is amazing!" She finished.
'So that's where the overly excited part of Sydney comes from...' Theo thought to himself.
(Present)
'That pretty much brings us here. Apparently, my mom was already planning on hiring a tutor for Sydney, I just accelerated the process.' Theo thought to himself as he looked at the robed man with brown hair and brown eyes.
"Is that so?" Kendra asked.
"But, of course. If you teach them when they're younger, they're likely to be better mages than if they learned later!" The man said.
"I suppose that is true." Kendra said.
"That aside, Pierre, let me show you your room to get you settled in." John said. Pierre nodded and followed John to the room on the stair mid-landing.
"Ah! That's right, Pierre!" Kendra said as she remembered something and began to quickly walk over to him. "Before we hired you, I was teaching them, so they both already know the basics and some chants!" Kendra said. Pierre seemed surprised for a moment, then contained it.
"Thank you, that will help me in setting up my lesson plan." Pierre said, then continued over to the room.
The rest of the day went normally, as Pierre was settling in and getting his lesson plan ready. The next day, after Theo finished his sword swings, his first magic lesson with Pierre started.
"This lesson is going to be focused on where you two are in capability." Pierre said as he walked back and forth in front of the two as they sat on the grass in the front yard. "I've been told you know some basic chants, so go ahead and give me your most complicated one." Pierre said. Sydney prepared to do her spell.
"Bend to my will and form what I wish," She began to chant, creating a red light.
'Oh, fire magic. A hard one to get right, as it can lose control easily if you are inexperienced.' Pierre thought.
"I call upon the flames of Salamander, a flame that I may control in the form of the phoenix," She continued as flames began to appear and ensnare her hand, slowly spreading up her forearm. "Form, and allow the rebirth of the phoenix, heal all injuries, phoenix flame!" She finished the spell, causing the flame to rush in growth and cover her body, then dissipate, as she has no wounds.
"Impressive, an intermediate level fire spell." Pierre said, then shifted his attention to Theodore.
'Remember to use chants...' Theo thought. "Bend to my will and form what I wish," He started the chant, creating a green light.
'Air magic, a good choice for beginners, though not as good as water.' Pierre thought as he nodded.
"I call upon the sylphs of that inhabit the air," He chanted, immediately causing Pierre's mind to send caution signals.
'That's not a low-level spell!' he thought, but still did not interrupt Theo as he was curious as to whether or not he could pull it off.
"Lend me your power," He said as the air around him began to move upwards in a circle. "Allow me to soar with the birds and touch the sky, bless upon me the blessing of flight." He finished the chant, causing him to lightly float above the ground.
'Amazing! This child has more talent than I could've imagined!' Pierre thought as he kept his face calm. "That's also impressive! A high-level air spell!" Pierre said with a smile. 'Usually, intermediate flame spells and high-level air spells would be similar in difficulty, but the flight spell is a difficult spell in particular due to the high levels of mana control required to use it properly...' He thought to himself.
"No! You have to say it with power!" Sydney said. "Like this!' She said, then cleared her throat. "Bless upon me the blessing of flight!" She said with large amounts of energy. "Like that!" Sydney said as she crossed her arms.
"Well, it's not really necessary." Pierre said.
"Nuh-uh! It is! It doesn't have the right sound otherwise! People should be excited to do magic!" Sydney said.
"Sydney, what if you're in a duel and you say a spell?' Theo asked. "Wouldn't your opponent hear your spell and be able to dodge or counter?" He added.
"Ah, well..." She said as she thought about it for a moment. "Hmm... True... Well, even so, I'll do it, so long as it won't be bad!" She said adamantly. Theo looked at Pierre.
'He's rather aware for his age. Interesting.' Pierre thought. "That aside, let's continue with the test." Pierre said.
"Right!" Sydney said excitedly.
"What's your understanding of magic theory?" Pierre said.
"Eh!?" Sydney made an unpleasant noise, clearly displeased. "He's better at that, I just want to cast spells!" She said happily as she mimicked her spell casting stance.
"We don't know much, mostly just the general idea of mana and how to invoke it." Theo said.
"Good to know." Pierre said. 'On another note, his demeanor is rather calm as well, very different from most people his age. The girl on the other hand... She's a bit too energetic...' He thought. "Well, that should be enough for today, tomorrow will be your first real lesson." Pierre said. Theo nodded.
"Okay!" Sydney said, then ran to the door and went inside happily.
"I'll continue practicing then..." Theo said quietly as he went over to the wooden sword that is leaning against the house. Pierre nodded, then went inside.
