While HOMRA did not make an announcement, the next move made by Sentry shocked them all. He showed up at the funeral for the Guardians the next day.
While all the heroes were arriving and Omni-Man was greeting them all, someone let out a gasp which got most of the persons in attendance attention. They all turned to the sky and saw the familiar black and red suit descend from the sky.
When Sentry stood before them, several figures were shocked when they recognized him. All the videos that were shown were blurry or taken from angles that never caught his face. It was only now that Mark, Nolan, the Teen Team, and Cecil found out that the new hero on the block was Conner.
Most of them did not know what to say. Should they pretend not to know him? Should they let others know that they were familiar with him? In the end, they all decided to keep quiet and ask about the situation in private.
Sentry went forward and took a seat towards the middle of the aisle of the right side of the seating. Many who had read the rumors online wanted to confront him but without any evidence, none of them could stop him from attending. Everyone decided to just ignore him. Omni-Man soon took to the podium and began his eulogy.
"We are gathered here today to remember the greatest team of superheroes, the world has ever known. That I've known... I've been working with the Guardians of the Globe since I came to Earth. They were mentors to me early in my career.
The Immortal, Darkwing, The Green Ghost, War Woman, The Red Rush, Martian Man, and Aquarus. Names we'll never forget. People that will go down in history. Legends... taken before their time. We...
What are you doing here?!?!" Omni-Man questioned as he noticed two people walking towards seats in the back
Both of these individuals were over 7' tall and had blue skin. These were the Mauler Twins, the criminals known for their intellect, strength, and stupidity.
"Please continue, Omni-Man. We are just here to pay our respects," one of the twins said
"Don't worry, Dad. I'll keep an eye on them. I'm sure they won't do anything with so many heroes here," Invincible said
Omni-Man nodded and was about to continue his speech when an explosion was heard from behind. The statue to celebrate the Guardians had been blown up.
"No! They were mine! Mine!"
The others looked toward the sky and saw an older man in power armor flying above them. It was obvious that he was the one who had just destroyed the statue.
Several heroes began to act. Some began to evacuate the civilians while others started making their way toward the flying man. But they were beaten to him.
Sentry was already in the air. After tanking one blast of energy to the chest, Sentry punched the old man once in the face before knocking him unconscious. And with the defeat of 'the villain that came to interrupt the funeral' trope, this superhero funeral had officially come to an end.
Before he could get questioned by his family and Cecil, Sentry took to the air. Omni-Man, Invincible, and Cecil still had things to deal with so they could only talk with him later.
Conner flew straight home while keeping his uniform on. He walked in the front door before heading to the kitchen. He figured if he was going to have a fight with his family, he might as well do it on a full stomach.
3 hours later, the rest of the Grayson family returned. When Debbie saw that Conner was sitting in the living room waiting for them with tea, she walked over and poured herself a cup.
"Thanks, hun."
"No problem. Figured everyone could use some tea after today."
"We are not going to pretend like he is not wearing that uniform! We are not going to pretend that he is not working for HOMRA! Explain yourself! Now!" Nolan demanded
Conner furrowed his brows. He expected there to be some arguments and disagreements but he did not expect such a fierce reaction. Conner stood up without fear in his eyes.
"Explain myself? I decided to enter the hero game. What else do I need to explain?" Conner responded with a calm but defiant voice
"Game?! You think this is a game?!?! If you wanted to be a hero you should have..."
"Asked for permission?" Conner interrupted. "Why would I need to do that? Did Mark? Do you have an issue that I didn't tell you about it or of who I am working sponsored by?"
"Of course I have an issue with HOMRA! Whether you are a sponsored brand ambassador for them or are working for them, I have issues with that. We are heroes! We don't do this for money!" Nolan said while trying not to lose his temper
"All those government heroes do it for free? Savage Dragon isn't paid? I didn't know that!" Conner questioned without backing down. "And who said a person can't be a hero for the money? Is every person in the military there because of their nationalism? Are all doctors just interested in helping and not about fame and wealth?"
"Both of you, just calm down. We can talk this out peacefully," Debbie said while trying to defuse the situation. Unfortunately, neither of the two were willing to back down
"No! Either you renounce that you are with HOMRA or you can get out of my house!" Nolan declared
"Nolan!"
"Dad!"
Mark and Debbie both tried to speak up but neither was listening to them
"Fine with me," Conner responded without a care in the world before flying to his room.
Conner secretly let out a sigh of relief. He was betting that Omni-Man wouldn't lose his temper and kill him over this matter but was still afraid for his life. He knew that if the two were to battle at that moment.
Conner started to pack as he heard his parents arguing in the living room. As he was packing, Mark came up the stairs and into his room.
"Why are you doing this? If you are short on cash, just take up a different job," Mark tried to plead with his brother
Conner looked at Mark for a moment before walking over and flicking him on the head.
"Ouch! What was that for?"
"For being my stupid little brother," Conner replied as he continued to pack. "As children, we look up to and follow after our parents. Their ideals and their beliefs. But eventually, we have to seek out our own path."
Conner wanted to hint at this before the fateful day so getting kicked out was the perfect chance. He was hoping that Mark would not be as driven by rage when they battled their father and would be of more help than he was in the show and comics.
While Mark was thinking over Conner's words, the older twin flew out the window toward one of the apartments he had purchased in the city. After getting kicked out, he would have much more freedom.
