Adelle had never expected Michael's mother to be such a forceful woman. In her mind, she always thought that rural women had no say of their own, always heeding their husbands and sons, but Michael's mother was an exception.

"Mom, you can't be so unreasonable," Jollie Auclair said as she looked at Adelle, who was almost at a loss for words. She hurriedly spoke up for Adelle; she relied on her to settle down in G City. She couldn't let her mother completely alienate Adelle.
However, Michael's mother turned around and slapped her daughter. "And you, either leave with me now and go home with me tomorrow, or stay in this glitzy city, and never come back. I don't need a daughter like you."
Her mother's actions, and the public slap, had completely stripped Jollie Auclair of her dignity. Her eyes were red and puffy with grievance, but Michael's mother turned a blind eye to it.
