After hanging up the phone with Avery's mother, Avery sent Bernard a text message explaining why she hadn't gone downstairs to get the key herself. She waited five minutes for a reply from Bernard, but when none came, she stopped waiting and crawled into bed to sleep.
After Bernard got home, Mona had not yet left. The cake they had delivered from the Cake Shop was mostly eaten, a clear sign that Mona had intentionally waited at home for his return.
Nancy was not pleased, "Yvonne said she liked cake, and you immediately took it upon yourself to buy it. But now you only return after such a long time, what exactly were you up to?"
"I ran into former colleagues on the way and ended up dining with them, so I came back late, my apologies," Bernard explained to Nancy, thinking he had made it very clear when they parted ways that afternoon.
