At Longfu Morris's home, his wife argued with him daily, and his daughter wouldn't even call him "Dad". He couldn't go anywhere because he was under investigation, making it inappropriate for him to seek out Jane Auclair and her daughter.
His in-laws, once they learned of the situation, would occasionally come round to help their daughter scold Longfu, their son-in-law. Despite their ordinarily refined demeanour, their abuse was no less crude than that of village gossips once they let go of their inhibitions.
Naturally, Longfu did not retaliate, nor did he dare to. Mrs. Morris impulsively wanted to divorce him instantly, to send him packing with nothing. It was only with the persuasion of her parents that she was dissuaded from doing so.
Indeed, even if he had no affection left for his wife, he could not divorce her, certainly not in the current circumstances.
