Chapter 1 - Prologue

The land was barren, not a single plant in sight. Even the soil was cracked and grey, the color of dust. In the middle of it all, stood three humans running from a mob of grey figures. The grey figures had tattered clothes, missing eyes, and green mucus dripping down their faces. I had never seen anything like them before, but subconsciously I labeled them as zombies.

I wanted to run away from them too like the three other humans were doing, as if it were a reaction ingrained in my bones, but I couldn't move. No matter how hard I tried my limbs were frozen, not budging an inch. The zombies kept getting closer! Then they-they- went straight under me???

I was surprised when the expected biting and pain didn't come. Instead I started moving, flying over the hoard of zombies and heading straight for the group of humans. The gap between the humans and the zombies was growing shorter. 10 meters. 5 meters. 3 meters. Suddenly one of them turned back and pushed another. It was like time had slowed; every little change was shown astonishingly vivid.

I was surprised to see their faces. The one who was pushed was me. My face looked older, more sallow, and thinner; it was as if I hadn't had a good meal in ages. No matter what though, I could still tell that it was me.

Looking at the face of the one who pushed me, it was none other than my brother. His face was vicious and the words made by his lips cut deep. I couldn't hear what he said nor had I ever learned lip reading, but his words were loud as if I had actually heard them before. "Go make yourself useful and die trash!"

I could see shock, sadness, and anger flash on my face, but everything was short lived; everything started going at a normal pace again. The zombies caught up and devoured me. I witnessed every bloody bite, as well as the smile that the last person, my stepsister, sent my way. By the end, the two had long left the scene and the only thing remaining of me was the splatters of blood on the ground. Not even my bones were spared.

Waking up, I drew a sharp breath of air. My dream felt too real; as if I myself had experienced it. It left me in a cold sweat. Everywhere felt tingly, as if reminding me of all the bites taken by the zombies.

I whipped out my phone to check the time, November 16th, 2:27 am. Looking at the date, something sparked in me. Suddenly I felt a sharp pain in my head; it felt like something that wasn't supposed to be there was forcibly carving a place for itself in my brain. I don't know how long it lasted, but when it ended everything felt clearer. November 16th, exactly 1 month before the apocalypse.
