Synopsis

Chapter 1 - Prologue

"Do you understand your mistake, Jason?" David, my senior manager asks.

"Yes, sir. I'll make sure it does not happen again." I answer the fat balding man in front of me while thinking of how hard his grey business suit must be working to not burst at the seams, trying to keep his truly large stomach hidden away. Thanking the seamstress or seamster that had made it, truly not wanting to see more of the man's form than what the ridiculously tight suit already shows.

"That's good, Jason. The next firm you work at will definitely appreciate that." He says smirking at me.

"I'm sorry sir, my next firm? I don't understand." Being thrown for a loop.

"Unfortunately, the firm will have to downsize due to losing such a large customer. And as you were the one that cost us the customer, you will have to be the first to be let go," He says smugly.

"But sir. I wa-" I try to say but he cuts me off.

"Jason, you don't want to cause a scene and risk losing your benefits and last month's pay, do you?" he asks. Still with that stupid smug smirk on his face.

As if I care about the money. I think, but not wanting to make a spectacle of myself I just grit my teeth.

" You can go." Waving his hand dismissively like I'm some fly that he's trying to swat.

"Yes sir, Have a nice evening sir," I say through gritted teeth. The only answer I receive as I leave his office is a chuckle. Oh, how I wish I could smack that stupid grin off his face.

Walking back to my tiny office to pack my stuff. Silently fuming to myself about how truly unfair this fat pig was being. Running my name through the mud to the customer and senior managers after I followed his instructions to the letter, And I told the pig that outsourcing the design work to a smaller graphic design firm was a mistake, especially for such an important customer. And what happened was that the small customer leaked the designs to the media before the product could be released. The result was that our customer left us, accusing us of incompetence and that we could not be trusted with confidential information. They were not wrong.

The fucker pretended like he had no idea that we used a smaller, less reputable company to do the work. The pig was the one to give me the companies contact details in the first place.

Packing my stuff from my office only took half an hour, leaving my office for the last time I look back and sigh, thinking back to how hard I worked the last few years to earn it, and now that just gone up in flames. Walking past my supervisor's office door on my way to the elevators, I hear him talking on the phone to someone, not thinking much of it until I hear a familiar name.

"Yes, Mr. Prince. I fired him and am in the process of running his name through the mud so that no one will hire him in this city again."

Fucking Samual Prince, what does he have to do with this, I barely know of the man, he's the CEO's son of the company that just dropped us. I've never even spoken to the man. I can hear someone talking on the other side of the phone just not what he's saying.

"No sir, thank you. That bastard was climbing the ranks far too quickly for my liking and he would have been coming for my job next." I hear my senior manager say.

At least I know why the pig did what he did, and how is it my fault that I was going for his position. He's the one that stagnated in his position. Does he expect everyone to stay under him forever never moving up in the company?

My biggest question is what does Samual Prince have against me? This question keeps ringing in my head as I quickly leave the office before I get seen by anybody, not wanting the pig to know I heard his Phone call. While getting a cab and giving the driver my address to take me home. Slowly I watch the lights of the city go by, I think to myself what I'm gonna do with myself now, I don't want to have to start again in another city, right at the bottom of the pile. I worked far too hard to get where I am, well where I was.

As the taxi stops outside my building in a relatively safe part of town. I have a three-bedroom apartment on the top floor of this building that I got for a steal when I moved to New York after my parents died in a car crash, leaving me a sizeable inheritance. That was seven years ago, just after I had turned 18 years old.

" Thanks," I say as I pay the driver. Getting out of the car with my box from my office.

Entering the door to my apartment, the first thing I see is a stunning view of the city and the only reason I bought this place. Leaving the box on the counter in the kitchen. I sit down on the sofa, slowly sinking down into the cushions. I think to myself that I'll deal with all that went down today tomorrow when I'm not so agitated and can think straight.

Picking up my iPad from the coffee table, and as I'm about to open my reading app I receive a notification that pops up directly in the path of my finger. I accidentally click the yes button not having been able to read what I was agreeing to. Immediately after I click yes, I feel as if I'm being pushed and pulled in every direction at the same time and then darkness as I pass out.

Jason just disappeared leaving an empty apartment with only an iPad showing a notification.
