Chapter 40 - Guilty Plea

Sweat greased his palms and his grip on the boulder was quickly slipping. But it had to be done, he decided. If he let him go, then everyone else was in danger, especially Samantha.

'Brendan, please don't! I'm begging you.' It was Samantha. She had finally woken up.

He placed the boulder back on the ground and he rushed to her aid. He knelt on one knee and tore the ropes that bound her with ease using only one hand.

As soon as she had been freed, she embraced him and began crying heavily into his chest. 'Please don't hurt him, Brendan. You don't have to kill him, please.'

'Not only did he kidnap you, Samantha but he burnt people alive, innocent people with wives, husbands and children.'

'I understand that but I cannot watch you kill him.' She had removed her face from his chest.

'Don't worry; I'll make it quick.' He got up and moved towards the Flicker but Samantha was in pursuit, staggering like a wounded deer.

'Brendan, I am begging you, please! Don't do this!'

'People like him don't deserve to be drawing any more breaths from this earth.' He picked the boulder up again.

She clung onto his leg. 'Brendan, please don't do it. I'll do anything you want just don't take my brother away from me please, please I beg you!' She wailed.

Brendan then realized just how much she loved her brother. How she was willing to forgive the same person that was trying to kill her. A person who had vowed to.

'Please…' she pleaded once more then she suddenly fell unconscious, her hands still clinging onto his leg.

'You don't want blood on your hands, man,' the Flicker spoke from the clutches of the thorn bush, 'and besides that fact, I don't think you have the guts to do it…Yes, I can see it. You do not have a killer's eyes… like mine…' his pupils turned red again.

'Shut up!' he silenced him while dropping the boulder to his side, making a loud thud. 'You know nothing about me, you monster. And don't bother flushing your little eyeballs because you can't move at all.'

'So you know about our eyes?' He grinned sinisterly.

'I know enough about monsters like you. The only reason I'm letting you go is because of Samantha.' He picked her up in his arms and began walking away.

'No matter how far you run, you'll never escape the call of Destiny. You will join us and you will fight with us, Eriksson!' he shouted from the thorn bush.

Brendan ignored him, walking away with Samantha safe in his hands.

Brendan spent almost five minutes trying to find his way out of the forest. To avoid questions, he used his enhanced speed to get to her house.

He balanced her upper body with his right arm and with his left, rang the bell. He prayed that her parents were not home. He rang the bell two more times but no answer came so he decided to take the next step. He pulled the gate towards him, breaking the padlock. He picked her legs up and headed for their front door.

The yard was lavish, beautiful and green, like a city park. To the right of the gate were a huge swimming pool and a small shed with garden chairs. To his left, there was a much bigger shed which had what looked like garden tools. This shed was surrounded by a beautiful well-trimmed lawn.

As he carried her he looked down at her face. She looked so peaceful and fragile in his hands, like an egg.

He walked up the front steps of the house and rang the doorbell twice but there was no answer. He grabbed hold of the doorknob and turned it and he discovered that the door was not locked. He opened it and walked in.

The house was beautifully decorated. Every single piece of furniture he could see looked like it had cost a fortune. There were pictures and portraits of Samantha and her whole family hanging on the walls. The pictures were taken from when she was a little girl up to at least the past five years.

Brendan did not stop to view the pictures. He carried her up a huge flight of stairs where he found countless doors along the corridor. He nudged each door open one by one trying to guess which room was hers. He stumbled upon one which had its walls painted pink and he thought that this time his guess was 100% correct. The bed in the room had gold-laced edges on the bedspread and there was a big white teddy bear sitting beside a white pillow. There was a small dressing table beside the bed which had a large mirror and bottles of face powder, lip balm and lipstick. He carried her to the bed and gently laid her on it. He stared at her for a while as she breathed softly then he headed for the door. When he placed his hand on the doorknob he heard her make a sound. She was waking up. He quickly walked back to her.
