Thursday morning found Brendan still hatching a plan to settle his score with Thomas. He had thought of pulling down his pants in front of the whole school but he ignored this stupid idea thinking it would only result in Thomas beating him up; severely too!
He grabbed his backpack after breakfast and headed straight for school. He had to speak to his best friend.
When he got to school, before his first lesson, he called Simon over to him. 'You'll be at our usual spot at recess?' he asked in whisper.
'Is that a trick question?' Simon was surprised at this question because he had never sat anywhere else during recess.
'I have to be sure.' His expression was ominous.
'Sure about what?'
'I have to talk to you about something. Something very important.'
Simon hesitated, his expression still confused. 'O…Okay,' he stuttered.
The first lesson was Physics, which ended quicker than Brendan had hoped. The next one was Literature then finally came one of his nightmares, Math. But it too had to end and the bell for recess rang.
'So, what is it you wanted to talk to me about?' Simon asked him at recess as they sat at their table. This question came in form of a whisper as he wolfed down a doughnut at the same time.
'Do you believe in magic?' Brendan asked, lowering his head and whispering too.
'Of course I do, I always have,' he answered him still stuffing his mouth full with loads of food at the same time. 'Why?' Simon's face was curiosity. Brendan had never been interested in anything supernatural like magic before.
'Does this "Finch" you spoke of make wealth related deals?'
'Uh-huh. All kinds: wealth, power, Angus trouble, Thomas trouble, Sam…'
'Okay, I get it,' he cut him short, knowing the list was endless. 'But do you know any of the people who have made deals with her?'
'Only one. Samantha's brother.' He was now working on another doughnut with great alacrity.
'Wait a minute.' Brendan was stunned. 'Samantha's "brother"?'
'Yes. Didn't you know the spoiled brat had a brother? Honestly, Brendan you should rely not only on me as your friend.'
'What do you mean she had?'
'Frederick Patricks. He disappeared a few years back. He was about seventeen when he vanished. I heard he was mean, just like his sister but I seriously doubt that. No cruelty can match hers.'
'What kind of deal did he make?'
'I don't know. All I know is he went AWOL weeks after the deal.'
'How did she take it?'
'Isn't it obvious? This is her family we're talking about. She may be heartless but she loved her brother more than you could ever imagine.' He looked covetously at Brendan's untouched tray of food. 'Are you gonna eat that?'
'No, help yourself,' Brendan said pushing the tray with the back of his hand towards Simon.
He promptly pushed his aside and welcomed Brendan's with great anticipation and began devouring its delicacies.
Samantha stopped by their table and looked at the way he was eating and the empty tray beside him. She said, 'You must be the greediest boy on the planet. Perhaps you thought eating would make your mother's drug problem disappear? Or maybe school is the only place you get to enjoy a real meal other than those eggshells and corncobs your daddy feeds you for breakfast and the two gems and a qrot mommy gives you to buy her weed on your way back?' She shook her head in pretense pity. 'You sure come from a broken home,' she concluded before walking away.
'Is that all you wanted to ask me?' Simon asked him now dealing with the last muffin on his tray.
'No. I need your help getting back at Thomas.'
