Chapter 2 - The Fall of Hope

Asahi continues reading the journal, as he heads outside and sits against the wall of the old shack. The sun's light helps him make out what is written on the poorly formed journal.

"Day 2…

Well, I finally got what I needed from town to make this book. I don't know if this will ever help me, but hopefully it might help Asahi if he wakes up from his trance-like state, where he is simply standing in the field. He hasn't moved, he hasn't breathed, he hasn't eaten since we arrived. We were sent here not too long ago and we arrived in an empty field with a fairly well built shack. It is humble in size, but definitely enough for Asahi and I. One other thing to mention is that Asahi has a shovel, and I was holding a pair of shears, but we had nothing else. I guess the Gatekeeper wants us to be farmers, but luckily there is a town only about 2 kilometers away. The town is called the Dirtstar, there's not too much in the town. After I came back from the town, I made this book, and I tried to use the shears to cut the leather and paper, but the stupid thing doesn't cut. What good are shears that don't cut?"

"Day 4…

I am in need of money to get us food, and anything else we may need to start this farm. I started to work at the tavern out of town for some money. No point in just waiting, though it'd be more comforting to have him in my sights at all times."

"Day 14…

Well, he is still just standing in the field not moving, not reacting. Asahi hasn't moved since we were sent here by the Gatekeeper. I've done everything I could to wake him up. I tried to slap him, punch him, push him. But he was like a metal statue, a statue grasping that same shovel, and not letting go. I will go to town to see if they can help me wake him up. I'm willing to do anything."

"Day 17…

Weeks have passed, and he still has not moved. For my last attempt, I went to the tavern for work, and started to ask around for advice throughout the night. Only one person told me about a lead, a man dressed in a dark hood, covering most of his body, and all of his face. All he told me was that if I really needed help, I should go to Farbreach, and ask around for someone named Johnny Walker. He is supposedly tall and wears 'funny' clothes. I will head out tomorrow to save Asahi. I will gather all the food I need, and take one of the satchels I bought. But I will leave what I can just in case he awakes."

The journal ends. Not everything was legible, but at least he has leads thanks to a few legible entries, and his wife's planning ahead. The sun was starting to set, and he had no provisions to start his trip. Asahi then needed to plunder what was in the house. Hoping for food, a bag or maybe something to protect himself, Asahi started to run around the unlit shack before all the light was gone.

After some time Asahi had piled everything next to the door that he knocked over earlier. As the last light from the sunset disappeared, he lit the door on fire with his shovel and a rock. He observed the provisions he now had. An old brown leather satchel, three metallic coins, a pair of lightly worn boots, the journal, a pair of shears, and obviously his shovel. He couldn't find food that wasn't already being devoured by rats, or fungi. The boots will replace his current, completely worn boots, and the satchel will be a huge help as there are no visible holes nor other issues to be noted. But what really caught his attention was the shears. These must be the pointless shears that Aneko was complaining about earlier. He took a page from the journal, and tried to cut it, but it stopped. It felt as though he was trying to cut a steel rod with safety scissors. Nothing happened to the page.

"These are worthless, but maybe I can sell them in town for some food," Asahi murmured. But then the thought entered his mind, why would the gatekeeper give us shears that don't cut, and a shovel. Then a bit of doubt entered his mind as he turned his head to the shovel. Asahi jumped up, grasped the wooden handle of the shovel, and with all his fear, anxiety, and hope, he began to thrust the shovel into the soft dirt beneath his feet.

TINNNNGGGGGG. The shovel bounced upward from the dirt, as though he just tried to split a brick with a butter knife. "WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU GATEKEEPER?"

Just then a bolt of lightning struck the shack, and launched Asahi and everything he grabbed a fair distance into the field. And just like that, everything went dark.
