Chapter 2 - Love Birds Sometimes Don’t Fly

The thought of being underground freaked him out, but Walt was close. He liked being close. Finally they reached the end of the elevated platform's drop. Walt let go of his hand, heading up a flight of stairs. Silently leading him on.

"Are you okay, cowboy?" MacCready asked still following close behind, "If there is something on your mind, I'd love to hear it."

Nothing came of the attempt, even with that nickname that usually made Walt's heart flutter. It was freezing, the merc felt his body shudder. He hadn't been this cold since he was a kid, Little Lamplight was also underground.

After a couple minutes of walking his lover stopped completely, causing him to run right into his back.

"Oh shi- Sorry." He had gotten distracted by the area being new. Walt looked directly at one of the many contraptions that surrounded them. MacCready looked over his shoulder through the glass. It was a woman. She had dark skin that was frozen, with icicles hanging off almost every inch of her. Her hair seemed to be black, but was a victim to the same fate as her body; coated in ice. This must be... Evelyn. The look in Walt's eyes as he stared into the pod, told him it all.

"Hey, I-I'm really sorry, we don't have to be here if you don't want to- I... I'll leave you alone." He said backing away from the situation. He sat on the steps that were a couple feet away. A few silent moments passed until he heard the other man's lips part. It was too fucking quiet in here.

"Hi, Evelyn. It's been a while." He heard the grieving man mutter. "I brought someone special with me." MacCready could hear the pain in the words as he spoke. His voice breaking.

"I think.. You would've loved him, he's made me as happy as you did." Walt continued, closing his eyes and leaning his head against the glass.

"I... I miss you." He said, pulling back as MacCready placed a hand on his shoulder.

"You're not alone in this anymore. I'm here for you." The merc spoke softly, in the most comforting tone he could muster. Walt wrapped his arm around his scronny body and held him close. MacCready could feel his body shaking as he cried.

"I love her... So.. Much." Walt whispered into the crook of the merc's grime covered neck.

"I know, she is always with you." They stood there in each other's embrace for a good amount of time. MacCready understood what the other man was going through and knew it would take a lot of time to grieve. He also knew that Walt never allowed himself time to do so, he was always running away from it. Doing work for settlers, fighting the Brotherhood, or attending to MacCready's needs. Ignoring his own feelings and time for others.
