The next morning Esmeralda seemed tired, which was strange. It wasn't like she was the one entertaining an enthusiastic husband or getting up every few hours to take care of the baby. After the experience I had with Henry I made sure to spare her from that.
"Did something happen?" I asked over breakfast preparations. Esmeralda shook her head.
"Perhaps, if it isn't too much trouble, I could be permitted to stay in the slave pens? I'll make sure to arrive early every day," she asked tentatively.
"What brought this on?"
"Nothing in particular."
"Well, if that's what you want to do I don't see any reason to prohibit it. You should ask Jacob to arrange it."
"Thank you."
