Chapter 19 - Letters and kings barrow

The two made their way to the path on the right side that led to the coast which also had a short cave path that seemed to have been a pattern for some reason. the path was not very long maybe five minutes of walking. the path opened up into a clearing with a waterfall and a circle of trees around a pond that the waterfall falls into. next to the pond was a large three sided stone with a little bit of moss growing on its faces and weeds growing all around it.

Alastair walked to this stone and dug next to it carefully so he didn't damage whatever his grandpa left there and soon found a small ornate wooden box. opening the box he found to letters one obviously older and fancier than the other with the envelope being gilded along the edges. there was also a small blue stone with neatly carved edges that had a magical signature. alastair read the newer letter that was addressed to him that basically talked about how chalky was proud of how he seemed to turn out and that the stone was a keystone to the door of departure on the coast.

The letter went on to explain that the other letter was from his bodies original mother and that it and the gemstone were the only things he had when chalky found him. the letter talked about how chalky had noticed that shimmering rage deep in alastairs eyes when they spoke and how chalky hoped that he would let it go before it ate him alive from the inside out. alastair could only shake his head at that part before he finished the letter that had chalky wishing him the best health and all his love goes with him bringing a tear to alastairs eyes before he calmed down again.

The letter from his bodies original mother went exactly like it did in the game so i wont describe what it said. after finishing both letters alastair packed them away carefully along with the keystone in his satchel. "my grandpa left the keystone to the door of departure on the emerald coast so we don't need to find a boat anymore and didn't you say the kings barrow was near the coast as well?" alastair asked calmly. erik nodded "yeah so i'm guessing we are heading to the door of departure after we swing by the kings barrow?" erik asked.

Alastair nodded "lets go grab that orb of yours before making ourselves scarce as I'd rather not have to kill someone today." he said with a sigh. "kill someone what are you talking about!?" erik exclaimed in surprise. "do you really think the king will only search for us in the capital?" alastair asked seriously. erik froze at the question but after thinking on it for a moment realized that alastair was right and that they are likely to run into heliodoran soldiers searching for them if they didn't leave quickly.

"But why did you say you didn't want to kill anyone today if we would run into soldiers?" he asked slightly confused. "those looking for us from heliodor or rather looking for me aren't doing so to simply capture me. the fact of the matter is that after they do capture me they will likely execute me publicly and if it is my life they are after why would i spare their own?" alastair asked logically. "i get what you mean but if we can escape without killing anyone i would prefer we try that instead." erik said hopefully.

"If i can avoid killing anyone i will but i refuse to hand over my life without doing everything i can to avoid that fate." alastair said seriously and erik nodded sternly. "but enough about that dark stuff we have an orb to collect no?" alastair changes the subject before giving a sly grin that erik returns. after this the two head further along the path until they leave this slightly forested area and into a large field with the sea in view from the distance. on the right side of the field there is a large mayan pyramid looking structure that erik said was the kings barrow.

The field had several semi aquatic monsters near the coast including crabbers and kalamari kids that had the shape of giant green crabs and large purple squids with what looks like rattles. the rest of the monsters on the field were standard goblins stark ravens and a mechanical monster that looked like a steampunk egg. alastair and erik killed the monster between them and the kings barrow but ignored the rest since they were in a hurry. after walking and fighting for an hour and a half the two finally arrive at the bottom of the kings barrow.

Strangely there were no soldiers guarding the barrow which was odd considering its importance and made both alastair and erik feel that something was wrong. walking up the steps of the kings barrow the feeling of unease grew greater until they reached the entrance of the barrow and they finally knew what was wrong. throughout the entrance hall there were the corpses of heliodoran soldiers in horrifying states were some had been ripped into pieces and others who had their intestines spilled across the ground beneath them the shear scent of blood in the air made the two nauseous.

"What on erdrea happened here?" erik asked no one in particular. alastair checked the wounds on the corpses and came to the conclusion that not human weapon was used to make them leaving only one thing left , monsters. "from the wounds it looks like some sort of monster torn these poor men apart like wet bread." alastair shared his findings with a serious expression. the two shared a firm look before they continued through the barrow continuously heading down while dealing with a few small monsters along the way.
