Chapter 9 - Revelations

Babyl followed her, and they went into the dark forest.

Soon, the familiar treehouse emerged, and luckily for the couple, fire from inside of the house emitted a soft light, indicating that the witch doctor was still awake.

"DOCTOR!" Siria called out to her.

In a moment, the handle to the door shook, and a silhouette appeared at the balcony.

Enheduanna looked at the disheveled couple, and then to the limp child in their arms.

She rubbed her eyes repeatedly and noticed that the child was, in fact, Anku.

"What's wrong? Come up here."

She helped the three of them up and brought them into the house.

"Put him down on the bed, I'll examine his state."

The two obliged, and she closed in and looked at his limp body.

"Burns?" She turned around and asked the couple.

They nodded guiltily, and she went back to examining him.

*Huff*

Surprisingly, Anku's breathing returned to a normal state, and he seemed to be in a recuperation state.

More closely, she didn't distinguish any hint of damage to his bones, and from his frown whenever she came into contact with the wound, his senses functioned normally.

'As expected of a child with his level of natural energy, he's preserving through this in great shape.'

She smiled lightly, and announced the news to the anxious couple in a low voice, "He'll do just fine."

A weight seemed to drop from their shoulders, as they burst into tears from this blissful declaration.

Although, she still had to treat the burn.

Enheduanna went through a cabinet in her house full of various medicinal ointments and took out one of them.

It had a jelly texture, and green, vibrant color.

She grabbed a handful of the gel and rubbed it on the burn.

In reaction to this, Anku frowned, seemingly from great pain.

Siria and Babyl stopped breathing for a second, but she reassured them, "It's a normal reaction, don't worry about him."

"How can we not worry about him?" They looked at her incredulously.

Enheduanna shook her head, as she realized the stupidity of her remark.

Though, since this opportunity presented itself, she wouldn't forget to talk to the parents about their child.

"You know, it would be a waste to have your son live a farming life, forever in this town."

The two stared at her strangely, and Siria questioned, "What do you mean?"

Enheduanna didn't need to speak, as they should see with their own eyes what she was talking about.

She brought out a bronze needle from her toolkit, and beckoned to Babyl, "Approach Anku with this needle in your hand."

Babyl obliged, and as the needle neared the child, he noticed the uncontrollable shaking in his hand, and looked at Enheduanna, awaiting an explanation.

In response, she smirked and stated, "Your child has an unnatural amount of natural energy."

"That's why he was able to survive a burn this bad."

The couple were simple farm people and were unfamiliar with the terminology she was using.

She understood, and explained in simpler terms, "He could become a priest at a temple of Narth or Kubriq."

The two's mouths widened, and they stood there, stunned.

Priests were mysterious creatures, and the closest to the gods and some even said they had great, inhuman powers.

They couldn't believe this assessment of hers.

"Haven't you noticed strange happenings around your son's strength and recovery?"

Babyl rubbed his glabella, and furrowing his brows, he stated, "Now that you say it, he does recover from wounds extremely fast, faster than I've ever seen anyone do so."

Siria also added, "He can also carry a basket half-filled with heavy apples..."

"Exactly."

"If I were you, I wouldn't let his talents rot in this backwater village."

Babyl and Siria found themselves in a dilemma.

Their frowns were deep, and their indecisiveness was clear.

"Of course, you're his parents, and you're the ones who can and should make that decisi-

"Enheduanna, I understand, but I, at least, want to see my light until the day I die..." Siria resolvedly answered.

"Me too..."

Enheduanna fully understood and empathized with their reasoning.

She took a look at the child in question.

It was clear that he was struggling, persevering, and braving on through great pain, but she somehow knew, that he would recover, and make his parent's wish come true.

'What does the future hold for this child, I wonder?'
