The night was like any other, the moon shining a pale purple. It was early dusk and the sky was a dark blue. There were still hues of red and pink near the horizon, but it was still early. So while those of the tribe began their nightly task, most only just now waking up but many have been up even before the death ball in the sky was finally down. The tribe was buzzing with people going about their business while not far away in a meadow the children were playing chasing one another around as their parents watched as they went about their chores or gossiping about the different little aspects of their lives.
A young girl with pale ivory skin, only 5 years old stood looking up, her pale aqua blue hair blowing in the breeze catching the filtered moonlight as if the moon truly loved her, her silver eyes looking up at the red clouds as they drifted high above her. It wouldn't be long now, the moon would come out from the clouds no longer blocked by their ethereal shadows, during the day they blocked most of the blazing sun's rays and if not for them most of the people of the tribe would not be able to go out at all until after it sank below the horizon. The moon would shine it's silvery light on the world and she could drink in the cool soft light that somehow out shown the sun itself lighting the world around them as it did.
The moon protected the people, it gave them comfort when otherwise there would be none. On nights like tonight where even the weather was behaving was rare, far and few in between. Even the youngest child among them could tell you when they would at last be able to feel it's pure love and protection again, an instinct developed far too long ago for any one people to ever remember. Much less a person.
She looked around at the other children playing knowing that they were just as excited as she was. It had been months since the last time anyone was able to drink in the cool light and the old ones were starting to weaken again. Their hair loses it's once vibrant color, their eyes growing dark. In particular the eldest among them their eyes had even started turning an unnatural muddy brown!
Yes, the sun was important. Without it they would freeze, there was no doubt about this and furthermore everyone from even the youngest, smallest child knew that the moon merely reflected the sun's light and did not produce it itself. But the sun's rays were far too harsh and if one was lucky they would only get burned by it, however so very many even caught on fire. It was truly terrifying to both need the sun and fear it.
This is where the werewolves were considered lucky, they could still go out under the sun if they stuck to the shadows or they could even run across small fields to get under the protection of the shade of trees on the other side if they needed to. The vampires however were not so lucky, neither were a great many other people that called the night their home.
There were legends once; that if you managed to get the blessing of either the moon or the dragon's that regardless of your race the sun would not harm you. No one of the tribe had seen a dragon in several generations and the Goddess of the Moon has remained silent for what the elders have said were centuries.
The girl looked back up at the clouds, feeling the pull far stronger than before. She ran to a tree at the edge of the meadow and started climbing it, startling many of the adults and other children. Wasn't it still too early for that? The moon wouldn't show herself for some time still.
Right?
The adults chuckled happily, quietly giggling about the girls' eagerness. The girl however didn't care what they said. She knew they were wrong!
"I will be the first one to feel her love tonight!" She reached the top of the branches only to find that a young boy had followed her. He had Dark green hair and his eyes were golden, there were specks of what could be either green or silver throughout the coloring though. Maybe even both? His skin is a deep dark black in color making him nearly invisible in the shadows if not for the light of his eyes.
"I know you, don't I?" She asked, already liking the boy for some unknown reason. She held out her hand to help him up and he looked startled but he smiled showing his sharp white teeth as he climbed out of the shadows.
"I'm Agni, yeah I've seen you around the camp a lot but for some reason my parents don't really let me play with the other kids. Vampires or Werewolves," his smile slowly disappeared but not entirely. He looked at her with open curiosity only to see her smile in return.
"I'm Chandra, don't worry. I'll make sure to help you sneak away to play if you want?" She tilted her head, making her long silvery hair drift into her face until she pushed them back behind a slightly pointed ear again.
"I would really like that," Agni's smile returned, large and broad again.
"The moon is about to come out, I don't care what the adults say. They are wrong," Chandra huffed while they found branches to get comfortable while waiting.
"Me too! It's like my blood is singing, I can't stay away!" Agni hollered and the two laughed as they waited for Moon Goddess to show herself.
"I think she might even speak tonight," Chandra whispered as if anyone else were close enough to actually hear them.
"What do you think she will say?" Agni asked, his eyes wide in surprise.
"I don't know but to hear her voice? It must be beautiful," Chandra sighed and then when they looked at each other again they started laughing.
Time passed the two, as they talked in the top branches of the tree before they heard what sounded like a very angry woman screaming out his name, "AGNI! You will stay with the family! How dare you run away like this?"
The boy flinched at the voice but Chandra put her small hand over his mouth to keep him from saying anything before saying very loudly, "Fairy you are so funny!" Before she let her giggles ring through the night air. The two heard the woman cursing about stupid children letting themselves mingle with the other races.
"It's a disgrace!" They heard her practically spit before she walked back to the other side of the meadow and well out of hearing range.
Chandra didn't really mind though, it wasn't anything she hadn't heard before. When she looked back at Agni she saw his pretty golden eyes tearing up and frowned.
"I'm a vampire by the way, my mommy says that the moon goddess blessed me more than any other in a very long time," she sounded so proud while she smiled at the boy.
"I'm a werewolf, my mother says that the moon abandoned me and that's why my skin is so dark, so not even the moon would see me," Agni tried to smile, he really did but the words always hurt no matter if he said them or someone else.
"That's stupid! If she abandoned you then why would she give you such pretty eyes? If you ask me it's more like she made you so dark so that your eyes could shine even brighter than the sun. So she can always find you!" Chandra declared without an ounce of hesitation, she believed it with every fiber of her being too.
"Really?" Agni asked, looking hopeful.
"Of course!" Chandra held out her tiny pinky finger to the boy. "I swear that I am only speaking the truth," her smile flashed and the boy stared in wonder before taking her pinky in his and they shook, a small tingle zapping between them as they did.
