Chereads / Seeking the Island of Atlas / Chapter 7 - Heraklion

Chapter 7 - Heraklion

Heraklion had begun existence as Knossos' port. Today, Knossos was now a ruin nearby the port that was now a city. How things had changed. Strangely, not as much as one would have thought. The general area was still Crete's administrative capital. Athens may have ruled supreme in all of Greece, but for the island of Crete the same area still held dominion.

Walking through the streets of Heraklion, George and Angela took a look at a few shops. The one they were currently at had a number of small items to choose from. There was some small pottery, some jewellery, some figurines but what really caught George's eye was a small bull head. Why not? They were in Crete after all.

"George, can I ask your opinion of what to get?" Angela said, taking a look at some necklaces. She had not wanted the necklace Amalthea had given to him George but while looking at things to buy, she figured why not?

George walked on over to the table Angela was standing at. He took a look at what was there usually a stone of a certain color with a symbol of some sort on it. Not every symbol was restricted to a certain color and so, those with an image of a thunderbolt did not always seem to match. A yellow stone with a lightning bolt symbol matched perfectly, others were of questionable suitability. Did an eagle symbol even go with any color? The bull symbol seemed to go well with a black stone and then there was…

"I'm sorry, sir, what is this symbol here?" George asked, holding aloft a brown stone.

"Oak, young man! Oak!" The merchant answered.

Oak with brown made a good amount of sense. Next there was…

"Uh…" All George need do was hold up the stone.

"Pomegranate!"

Alright, so pomegranate on a maroon stone. Then was what appeared to be a peacock feather symbol. "How about a peacock feather, Angela?" George inquired, pointing to the stones with the peacock feather symbols upon them.

Angela took a look at the various colored stones, liking the idea of a peacock feather but wanting to see which color it worked best on. Red… Scarlet red was her favourite color but no. Blue… Her favourite color for a dress but again, no. Yellow? Certainly not! Green? Maybe. Orange? Angela had a feeling Beatrice probably had gotten an orange colored necklace for herself with gold and orange being her favourite colors. Purple? Maybe something else. Black? Maybe if she were only to wear it to funerals. Then Angela saw a color that appealed to her. A white stone looked very exquisite and combined with the peacock feather symbol.

"Oh, this is lovely!" Angela said, picking up the necklace she had chosen. She stared at it in admiration and added: "Whoever makes these is an artist!"

"Thank you, Miss." Said the Merchant. "My brother always says I should stick to the family business of winemaking but I have no love for wine."

"How about I pay for that, Angela?" George asked, pulling the Greek money he had been given by Ellen out of his right pocket. Just touching the necklace Amalthea had given him was enough to make George uncomfortable.

"Oh, George, you are such a dear!" Angela gave him a kiss on the cheek. It was hardly the first time such a thing had happened. The first time it had happened, both had been blushing afterward. They might as well have been a couple, but many a kiss on the cheek did not a couple make.
