It will be detrimental to a single person trying to achieve what they aim for. Going on tangents like this will be a waste of time for a single person if the tangent doesn't benefit the main point at all.
But they are not a single person. They can afford to go on a tangent because their combined residual mental power will make up for the distraction. They are still thinking about the main issue but they are stuck on what they should do. So they are thinking of something related to the problem that might help them out.
