CHAPTER 13

Only two people stood in Tom's office. All evidence had been reviewed and the conclusion was clear.

'Tomorrow, Bryson has to collect hair samples for inspection and if they match with the hair from Woodruff's house, it means Sofia was in the car with him. How did you get to this conclusion?' asked Tom, throwing the folder onto the table.

'Let me think… she came down from heaven, went to Woodruff's house and took him away? Or, she made an appointment with Carol to tell her about life in heaven? Then she wiped away her tears with a baby's handkerchief...' William twirled his finger in the air. 'This is complete madness and there must be a simpler explanation.'

'You're thinking too much. You can't deny the funeral.'

'I can, but don't see the point, Tom. I was there myself and I saw her being buried!'

'Maybe it wasn't hers?' suggested the inspector.

'Maybe you're right, it wasn't hers. If this is actually Sofia, how did she manage to get Woodruff away from his house and why? Why has he never mentioned knowing Sofia previously? Did they have some form of connection?', William just asked one question after another.

'We'll find out soon, don't worry. We do know that there was a third person involved. There's no phone in Woodruff's car. Based on the exhumation results, we'll request the last month's cell phone records from the court. Hopefully, this will show the missing link. I wonder why Woodruff died? I wish they'd done an autopsy yesterday. Woodruff's mother has been phoned and she approved it. Odd that he had cheap insurance, but for us, it means there's less paperwork. Let's try to trace all his patients, then we can find where to start. If there's no clues following the autopsy, we'll have to question all of them here.'

'Sir?', Sgt Huston's head popped into the office. Seeing a nod of approval, he entered. 'We can't get a pathologist as they're all too busy. I even phoned funeral homes and hospitals as well as the psychiatric clinic, but they're all hysterical getting ready for corpses from the virus and can't help. Bryson promised to call his contacts tomorrow.'

'Thanks Jimmy! By the way, Bill, were you for or against Trump's impeachment?' Thomas grinned. 'I thought he'd be blamed for the virus!'

'To be honest, I'm more concerned why the San Francisco 49-ers lost 31:20 to the Kansas City Chiefs. If you remember, at first they were ten up, then tied 20:20 and they got stuffed in the end'

'They must have been upset that the Patriots didn't reach the final, so they took their foot off the gas and lost', joked Tom. 'Glad you're getting your sense of humour back. You can't survive without it.'

'This isn't humour, it's anger. I'd open up Woodruff myself, if I could!'

'I told you it's humour, though maybe black humour.'
