Chapter 2 - Chapter 1 - The Day My Life Changed (1)

Perhaps I should clarify some things first.

This story is by no means a sad one. Nor does it have any particular meaning. Just take it as a ridiculous tale told by someone who doesn't really understand anything.

If I had to say a day when things really started, I wouldn't be able to tell you. After all, no one can really pin down when they first fell in love right?

What I can do, is name the date when I realized this fact.

An undeniable fact per say.

So let's turn back the clock a little back.

Towards that day.

That fateful day.

The day my life changed.

————————————

Now play this up as I might, this day wasn't even that different from the others. Look at it from an outside perspective nothing would seem amiss.

I can't exactly plot a date for this day—it was just that mundane—but I do remember one thing about it: it was the day after midterms.

This day began like any other, I walked to school just like normal. If anything was different, it was the very fact that it was the day after midterms. After all, what kind of school makes their students return after surviving those hellish exams?! Are they insane?! Even if I must say, they weren't that hard. Not for me at least.

It was with such thoughts in my mind that I trudged my way to school, grumbling about it along the way.

I live pretty close to the school, so much so that all it takes is a 10 minute walk to get there. Plus, I could always just bike there as well. Sure I have to wake up just a little bit earlier so I can actually walk instead of run, but I also hear that there are students who have to drive over 30 minutes just to arrive in time. Imagine having to walk that!

As I made my way down the usual path, I pick up a distant sound coming from behind me.

Tup. Tup. Tup.

The sound of sneakers hitting the pavement. Doesn't she know that the school dress code forbids those? Anyways, I, being the person I am, ignore the sound and pretend that I don't notice. I have appearances I have to keep up y'know?

...But I do hope she holds back a bit.

My silent prayers go unanswered as...

*SMACK*

"Ow! That hurt! Eri, why are you doing this so early in the morning?!" My pained yelp rings out as I look back at my childhood friend--the same one from the earlier flashback--as she flashes me a grin.

"Good morning Evan! Looks like you're up a little earlier than usual. Could it be that you're trying to meet up with someone?" This girl is Erica Meyers and she's on the track team. Due to this, she backs quite a punch if she gets a running start. There are more times than I can count where I've woken up with a hand-shaped mark on my back...

"Not really... all I did was wake up just a little bit earlier than usual..." My reply is flawless, the perfect noncommittal act of a dense airhead. And just like predicted, Erica responds as expected.

"Oho? Are you sure? You sure you're not trying to arrive early so you can talk with your dear senior?" Well yeah, obviously. But I can't just come right out and say that. Everyone knows these sort of things are better left unsaid.

"Urp..."

"Haha! Right on the money! I know you so well Evan." Erica responds, as bright as ever, but even so, she mutters under her breath, "But still... What about me? I'm part of it too y'know..."

Of course, this doesn't escape my hearing, but I pretend not to hear it and just say, "Hm? Did you just say something Eri?"

"No... It's nothing. Yeah! It's nothing! So listen to this Evan..." Erica appears to have gotten over her minor gloom earlier and she perks back up. She then proceeds to go on about some inane talk, stuff about the midterms we just took yesterday. I listen along to her, throwing in a few things here and there.

So far so good. Just need to keep it up a little longer. Everything is going according to my plan.

...Or so I thought.
