When it comes to innate abilities, two aspects were to be acknowledged as separate yet correlated.

Restrictions and Limitations.

A Restriction, as mentioned by Astrid, was a mechanism to balance out an innate ability so that it would not harm the user by getting unstable. After all, innate abilities were formed by condensed life energy into a form where it could materialise ideas.

For instance, the innate ability Lonely Bastard had the restriction of not allowing Josh to have any other person other than him within his protective space. This was the balance that made Lonely Bastard function perfectly without the possibility of its vast applicability harming Josh himself.

A Limitation was the extent to which the innate ability could be used. Its range, maximum output etc.
