Chapter 7 - Chapter 7

When I came into this world, there was only one thing that I recognized. The runic ring on my dresser was the same one as the ring I found on my bed and left on my Earth dresser the night before. Naturally, since this is my only connection to my old life, it would make sense for it to be the key to unlocking cheat abilities!

If I want a successful life and to reach the top of the world like so many other isekai protagonists, it only makes sense for me to always have what could be my cheat itself or the key to unlocking it on me at all times. This runic ring could help me unlock a mythic foundation or even something higher that hasn't been discovered before!

After all, from some guessing and pondering that I've done in my spare time, this ring is most likely the cause of my transportation to this world. I'm pretty sure that the ring even manipulated my Wernicke's area, the area of the brain responsible for language processing, to adapt to the different language and alphabet here. Thus this ring is most likely some powerful artifact with the power to change my life here.

Of course I'm going to wear it while I'm pulling the gacha for my foundation!

Plus, apparently this ring was given to Giles as a baby by a traveler my mom met while shopping in the market. Judging by how this ring was made to fit perfectly on my right middle finger as an 8 year old, it wasn't given to Giles as a mistake. My mom didn't tell me much more about the ring or the traveler other than that however, and only told me that before I lost my memory I used to wear the ring on my left middle finger instead.

Well here goes nothing!

The rest of the family starts counting down, and when they reach 1 I'll pull for my foundation.

UNLOCK SYSTEM (y/n)?

I press the y.

WARNING: This action can only be done once and is irreversible. Do you wish to proceed (y/n)?

I press the y again.

A visual of a locked door appears on my system interface. The padlock on the door unlocks and falls off of the door and the door slowly opens.

This is it! This is the moment where my future here gets decided! Ahhh I'm scared, nervous, anxious, and excited all at the same time.

Hold up. Why isn't there a light behind the slowly opening door? The textbook on the system said that common foundations will be indicated by a completely blue light behind the door when it's fully opened, uncommon foundations will be indicated by a purple center in a blue field, rare by a gold center, legendary by an orange center, and then mythic by a red center. There should at least be blue light appearing behind the door right now!

My heart fills with dread as the door slowly opens to reveal nothing. Shock fills my mind as I realize that this means I either don't have a foundation or I got one that hasn't been seen before. The familiar rush of adrenaline overtakes me, reminding me slightly of close calls I had during my career as a wrestler in high school. Hopefully this is part of the cheat that I tried to unlock.

The system gently opened the door all the way.

I'm greeted with a message.

ERROR CODE: 404. Foundation not found

SYSTEM will now be locked indefinitely

Status may be viewed and skills may be used, however there will be no system assistance. You are on your own.

Huhh, now everything else is turning black like the door

Am I falling?

**********************************

Why am I laying down, was I just sleeping?

The last thing that I remember was unlocking my system. Didn't I get screwed over? I swear I better now have fainted from shock or something else weak like that. I've never even fainted before!

Wait, is someone playing with my hair? I open my eyes to find myself staring directly into Gemma's face. She must have taken advantage of the situation to make her lap a pillow for me. Whatever, I'm still clothed and all so we don't have any problems.

I sit up since I could care less about how much she wants to pamper me and then take a look around. The whole family is here in the living room looking worried yet relieved, most likely since I passed out and woke up. There is someone else here though, an older man in black robes with black gloves who looked to be discussing something with my parents just moments before is looking over at me with a surprised expression on my face at the moment.

He makes his way over to me and kneels down on the floor in front of me which basically puts our eye levels at the same height.

"What's your name?" he asks.

"Giles Morgan" I respond.

"Ahh that's good, it seems that you still have your memories. Next question, what's the last thing that you remember?"

"I unlocked my system and saw the results, everything blacked out after that".

"It appears that you still remember the moment before you passed out which is good. Last question for now. What's your earliest memory?"

"Waking up in my room and finding my parents in the kitchen after wandering about for a bit".

"Ah, unfortunately you haven't recovered from your prior case of amnesia then. That's alright. I'm going to leave you alone now and go talk with your parents again. If you have any questions or concerns don't feel afraid to interrupt us and just ask what you want, ok?"

"Ok"

I look back over at Gemma and notice that she seems considerably shaken up. I didn't notice anything when I had just woken up most likely because when initially waking up even sleep paralysis demons seem like they're normal for a moment. I decide to lay my head back down on her lap and look up at her so that I can talk to her for a bit.

"Are you alright Gemma?"

"You hopeless child, I should be asking you that" She chokes out with a warbling voice.

"I didn't mean to worry you, sorry about that".

"Don't apologize to me, it makes it seem like you did something wrong. It's my job as a big sister to worry when dangerous things happen to you after all."

I suppose I do tend to apologize for no reason quite a lot. Years of experience as a cashier can do that to you I suppose.

"Well on another note, what are the odds that you'll tell me what your foundation is if I tell you what my foundation is? I'm not telling otherwise".

"Ugh fine, but you better not tell anyone else!"

She motions for me to sit up and when I do, she pulls my ear close to her mouth and silently whispers so softly that even a dog wouldn't hear it if it was in the same room. However, I still heard it.
