Mommy is the best!
That is what I thought as I snuggled into her arms, the smell of her sweet perfume comforting me like a soft embrace as the soft chirp of the garden entered through my ears.
Arms tightened around me as I looked up at her voice as she said, "Aren't you just the cutest!?"
A face came into view, one whose golden eyes shone like the sun, whose hair brightened like strands of light, and with a smile so loving that there was no other way but to reply to her with anything less than a smile. "Of course! I'm mommy's son!"
She pinched my cheek as she giggled, "Isn't my Little Sun so sweet."
"That's because mommy is the best!"
"Really? But I don't feel like the best." She gave a pout.
"Then I'm going to give you more hugs!" I buried myself in her arms as she squeezed me softly.
She brushed my golden hair aside as she gave my forehead a soft kiss, one that left me content as I closed my eyes.
"Then, since, you've been so sweet. Let mommy reward you."
"Really? What do I get then?"
"Well, it's a surprise, so close your eyes first. And don't open it till I tell you to."
Like a child, I followed, my eyes completely shut as I felt her hands gently touching mine. Cold metal rubbing against my skin. I shivered from its touch as the hand comes off with a giggle.
"You can look now, sweetie."
With her words, my eyes opened, coming upon the sight of the wondrous thing before me, its golden luster leaving me in awe as it glowed in an eerie light. I inspected it with curiosity as I asked "What is it, mommy?"
"Well, since you always told me you wanted to do magic the moment you found out about it. I thought who else was fit to teach my little Damien?" She gestured to herself, pride written over her face.
"Really! I get to learn magic!" I gasped before . "But what does this do?"
"Watch carefully, sweetie."
The ring on her finger lit up as a soft breeze flew from her hand, the sight leaving me breathless.
I watch on the edge of my seat as the still air move at her command, a small tornado blowing across her am.
"Wow."
"Then you want to learn?"
"YES!"
She tapped my nose. "Then close your eyes."
With her words, I shut my eyes, and I felt the world shift around me.
My eyes opened once more from a sudden spike of pain coursing through my veins, leaving me breathless and nauseous, only to open my eyes and come face to face with my mother.
Her worried expression was visible through the tears as she fussed over me.
"Are you alright? Should we stop? Can you still continue?"
"I'm okay, Mommy." I gave her a pained smile.
She tears up at the sight. "I'm so sorry, sweetie. But this is the only way Mommy can protect you."
The pain intensified as the pressure of magic slammed against my body.
The magic flowed through my veins, sucking every bit of magic that it could take, overloading the once dried-up veins and expanding what little reserves I used to have.
The pain tore through my body as a scream erupted from my throat.
Mommy was holding onto my shoulder as I screamed in utter agony,
She muttered her apologies as she held me, her once godlike beauty reduced to tears.
With the pain subsiding, I spat blood on the ground, my training complete. I reply to her with a soft and weakened smile.
"It's fine, I trust mommy."
With those words, I lost consciousness. The pain receded as darkness covers\ed my vision.
And from the darkness came the screams.
Something drops on my face as I open my eyes, only to look up to a scene that would forever be etched into my memories.
Her once lustrous purple eyes were now bloodshot, her once fluffy hair now coated in blood as sweat poured from her as she pushed the limits of her body.
She gives me a reassuring smile, noticing my expression of horror from the fire raging around us as she ran for her life and that of mine.
My wind whirled in thought, thinking up of ways to help, the recent exhaustion catching up to me as I pushed the limits of my body and cast whatever magic burned within it me.
Her state left me utterly helpless as I summon whatever magic burned within me.
She swings her hands as she strikes against the falling debris; the fires stopping whatever plan she had in mind as her magic rips through the mansion.
Shouts erupt behind us as tens of men stampede through the halls. My stomach dropping at the implication as I reach for her hand, savoring whatever feeling I could.
"She's here!"
"Find where she is! Burn it all down!"
She looked down at me with a weakened smile, blood dripping from her lips.
She puts me down, "It's fine, sweetie. Mommy will do her best to keep you safe. Don't be scared."
I look at her in a shocked nod, the grand staircase before us showing the scale of the attacks she was prepared to face.
Before I could utter a reply, the glass windows exploded. Splattering shards all over the grand staircase.
My body froze from shock, my mind tearing at the sight before me.
The little body I have, one that I once held dear, felt constricting, incapable of reacting to the tragedy unfolding before me.
Mother, though, reacted quickly, shielding me from the blast as I watch with a horrified expression at what such actions did to her.
The hair that was once filled with black luster has covered her loving eyes with blood as she gives me a weak smile.
Her once lavender scent mixes with the blood wafting through the air as she holds me tight. Shards of glass protrude behind her back.
"Sweetie, I'm sorry. It seems mommy can't stay with you." she whispers.
Her words shake me to my core as I croak out, "Mommy... please, no."
I feel panic coursing through my veins as I summon every bit of magic that I can. Only for blood to spill through my lips and tears flood my eyes.
Is this it? The second chance I found will be gone. The life that I could've lived with those that I love snuffed out before it could even happen.
My body, exhausted, failed to summon a sliver of magic, a weakness that I would live with forever. With such a thought, I could only look up to her, pleading for her to stay.
"Please, don't leave me. I just want to stay with you."
"I'm sorry." She kisses my forehead before pulling back. "Live well, my Little Damien."
She touches my cheek as she gives a proud smile. Her bloodshot eyes light up in a radiant hue as it bathes the manor in her light. A barrier shimmers before us as I shout.
"no. nono no no no NO NO NOOOOO!"
She closes her eyes as hundreds of explosions erupt behind her, consuming her and once more ending this peaceful life.
With such, red eyes opened with a scream.
