The first one that entered and Keon sees was the pope - Aether
Just like most of the Popes, Aether is a commoner. If the Imperial Family will choose one of the Imperial Suns as the Heir and the Tower will choose the strongest magicial among them as the Archmage, the Temple on the other hand has a different way of choosing the next pope
It was not by a matter of abilities of power. Instead, the previous Pope would receive a vision of where the next Pope would be located and he will go meet him
As soon as the Pope sees the next Pope, he could feel it with his heart
It was said that it was the Goddess herself that chooses the Pope through the use of the current Pope
And although many clerics are members of Nobility, most of the Popes have come from the commoners as if the Goddess also wants to give them power
