Chereads / Zombie Mage Is Overpowered / Chapter 3 - Running In The Night

Chapter 3 - Running In The Night

"KIIIIIIAAAAAKKKK!"

The scream lasted for several seconds and resounded in the surroundings, echoing in the dark night.

Keryan was speechless because instead of a creepy dark mage it was a beautiful girl and even if his heart had stopped beating, he couldn't resolve to kill her.

Unlike the other dark mages and necromancers, this girl didn't try to fight back or exterminate him but she just screamed in fear…

Was that an act? Keryan couldn't think properly at the moment and just stood there motionless…

Under her strands of icy blue hair, tears could be seen flowing on her cheeks. At this sight Keryan was lost, didn't know what to do, but since things went already south in this whole story, he could only try to speak to her.

"Eh! I'm not going to eat you, do you understand me? I'm a good man you see, a good man!"

Keryan showed his friendliest smile to her, unfortunately it was a smile full of bloody teeth adding more horror to the situation.

The girl, obviously, misunderstood his words and began shaking like a leaf, too frightened by the putrid monster in front of her!

Moreover, she was only a novice in dark magic without two full complete circles so even if she was going all out it would be a joke for a zombie like Keryan.

Keryan didn't waste anymore time so he kicked her bone staff away from her hands and carried her over his shoulder like a sack of rice.

"KIAAAKK, let me go, you monster!" The icy blue hair girl yelled madly.

However the zombie was unaffected by her punches and just carried on until he reached the border of the hamlet.

when he saw that the undead army had not yet had time to reach the village he was relieved.

But, even though many undead fell due to the death of their master, those revived by true dark magic were still numerous and mostly wandered aimlessly.

Keryan racked his brain for a time, then he put the girl on the ground, ordering her to not move and he prepared his first spell, it was the Call Of The Dead, something he just made on the spot.

The hooded zombie planted his bone stick in the ground and used his special zombie nature which was naturally living death. Connecting with dark magic was easy thanks to the newly accumulated mana in his body, so it was not hard to put magic in his voice to summon all the undead in the area.

"Undead! Hear my command! Retreat from this land right now or you'll perish by the hand of the hero of light! Toward the mountain!"

Unexpectedly, his spell was really powerful and used a lot of the mana he just acquired but it was also very effective. Under the pouring rain, walking in the mud, countless undead turned direction and followed his order, starting to run immediately.

Even Keryan was surprised about the effectiveness of his command and the girl on his side looked at him with renewed attention and the zombie didn't miss it, so he said.

"You should go, I didn't mean to capture you or anything, I hope you won't turn against us. I advise you to run away as far as you can, with dawn the hero of light will come and purify this land of the dead."

The icy blue hair girl furrowed her eyebrows and stood up, looking at him with a hint of fear and curiosity. She asked cautiously.

"Are… Are you with them?"

Keryan was surprised about the question, unfortunately he didn't have a slight clue about what she was saying. So he replied with his own question.

"Who are you speaking of?"

She replied in a whisper, fearing that others could hear.

"Masters of darkness!"

When hearing the answer, the zombie's interest was piqued, because in the game, there wasn't any mention about these characters.

He replies frankly.

"I don't know about these Masters of Darkness, however I know the hero of light is coming with a priestess by his side, they hate darkness and won't listen to me. I need to go."

He got his bone staff back and turned to leave, at that moment the girl with the icy blue hair grabbed him by the sleeve.

Water flowed from her hair like pearls on a silk carpet, sliding down her cheeks. Her gaze was both fearful and determined and she said.

"Wait! Powerful mage, please help me! They marked me with a death curse, can you remove it?"

The girl revealed her forearm to him, there was some sort of tattoo on it drawing a skull spider that seemed alive.

Keryan was shocked, because the skull spider was an elite force in the game, they were dark creatures forming a terrifying legion the hero had to fight in the last hour of the game.

But he had no idea of what to do with this cursed mark because the knowledge he acquired during his feast was more like instinct instead of complete memories.

He could only try and so he put the tip of the bone staff onto the skull spider tattoo. At its contact he was surprised to find out the problem of this mark, in fact, there was a deadly poison hidden in it with a magic spell he didn't know.

With his experience as a hardcore gamer, he knew that there should be a kind of trigger linked to the mind or soul of the victim so he wasn't confident in his power to erase it.

He then lowered his head and said frankly.

"I can't do much about it, I'm sorry."

"But there should be a solution! I can't just die, I don't want to! Take me with you, after all it was you who caused our plan to fail, you have to take responsibility!"

"Ugh! Wait, girl! What do you mean by 'taking responsibility', I don't do anything wrong to you!" he yelled outraged!

The icy blue hair girl stood right in front of him with her hands on her hips, all her previous fear disappeared.

"Hmf! What are you talking about, of course you did when you carried me like a sandbag, you monster!"

Keryan couldn't help facepalm. In the end he just said.

"Do what you want, I'm leaving… Don't forget that I could have killed you like your comrades, so don't bother me, it was my goodwill. I have much more to care about than a little girl that can't take care of herself."

Not willing to let go of this matter so easily, the girl gritted her teeth and just followed after him, anyway she had no idea what to do and this zombie was really powerful.

There was no return if she chose this path but she wasn't willing to go back home nor in the dark alliance. The holy Empire? It would only signify her death if they found out that she was a member of the dark forces and her family would be in grave danger. And above all, she had yet to take her revenge...

On his side, Keryan couldn't be careless about his next course of actions because the coming holy prince was only holy in name. That guy was a bloody battle maniac and in his state, Keryan knew perfectly that he had no chance at all to stand against him.

Armed with their natural advantages of not being hungry or thirsty and having infinite stamina, this army of zombies and skeletons was rapidly gaining ground towards the mountain in the distance.

Keryan had arrived at the outposts of this tide of undead, leading his troops into the unknown.

They had been running without stopping for hours and dawn would soon appear, that's when the icy blue haired girl spoke to him again.

"Hey you!"

She was out of breath, it was easy to see her suffering, her rosy cheeks had turned completely red from exhaustion but she had never complained about her condition since the start of their mad rush.

Keryan didn't turn toward her and just answered.

"What is it?"

"Are you idiot? This mountain is known to be inhabited by an Elemental! We'll be frozen to death before we pass through it!"

Keryan furrowed his eyebrows, in fact, he was annoyed. In the game he didn't even encounter or even heard of these so called Elementals so what he could do about it!"

Truth being told, that game was so shitty that there wasn't even a map in it! Now that keryan thought about it, he was lost in this world with no the slightest geography knowledge!

It turned out that this girl was the more knowledgeable asset he has right now on his side. Maybe there was some intelligent undead among his followers but he didn't have time to check it, because time was all they had in terms of advantage against the Holy Empire.

"Girl, it's only that my memories aren't fully back, it's a problem for us zombies. Maybe you can help us find a way to cross this mountain, we need to leave the Holy Empire as fast as we can."

The icy blue haired girl looked at him in disdain and said.

"Don't call me 'girl', I have a name, but you don't deserve to know it since you don't help me! Also… I suggest that we side the mountainous range until we reach the dark swamps. I know undead like you are affected by the daylight so we should stay under the cover of the forest during the day."

Keryan didn't ponder for too long because what the girl said was entirely right.

"Alright, let's go. Companions, hear me! Toward the forest!"
