Chereads / FRAINE: The Mistaken Mistress / Chapter 8 - Test Subject

Chapter 8 - Test Subject

Fraine entered the lift once it arrived on the ground floor. She pressed the 9th button and leaned back against the cold wall.

It's been many years since she avoided crossing any of the Lopezes, but her luck didn't work tonight.

She knew Jessa was living in the city, so she's cautious moving around periodically when she is in her treatment.

Unfortunately, she was assigned a task that isn't her job; now, it compromises her schedule.

Fraine hurls her deepest breath out from her lungs and releases them violently. Since Jessa has already seen her, she better pretend nothing happens, shrug off all the irrelevant anxieties, and settle herself.

She needs a clear mind and merely thinks of positive things. Being concerned about people from her past wouldn't help her mental health. Instead, it would affect her recovery.

Fraine steps out of the elevator with determination when it reaches the 9th floor.

She strode down the hallway toward the left wing of the building, headed to the Special Treatment Unit for cases like hers.

All patients who needed chemo or dialysis were intensively monitored with all the latest medical equipment in a particular room in that area.

The experts formed a specific unit only established in this hospital and the France base.

Gratefully, the Williams and Crow family built its Asian base here in Mainland City.

William Medical Research Center was first established in France and now supports Mainland City Hospital, recognized as the best in Asia.

Since then, Mainland City Hospital has treated rare cases of illness and performed intense research on a new medicine, mainly for diseases that had no cure yet, like hers.

But, of course, it will cost so much fortune.

Fraine could not afford it. But she is one of the exceptional cases under Doctor Derek Williams, the scientist who constantly breakthroughs science.

Doctor Williams aims to develop a 99% effectiveness of this medication based on her illness that it didn't need through chemo but orally without suffering, but with slight side effects only.

Fraine signed up to be granted free medication for voluntarily being a human test subject.

That's right. She signed it up a year ago, and she's waiting for Doctor Williams to produce that medicine in the form of a pill.

She enlisted, as she felt nothing would happen to her life if she just waited until her body could no longer move.

"Hi..." Fraine greeted the nurses on duty during the night shift.

"Good evening, Miss Fraine!"

"Good evening." Fraine smiled at the nurses, thus handed over the documents to the head nurse. "Hello, nurse Wella."

"Hi, Miss Fraine, thank you." Nurse Wella made a quick scan of the documents before she placed them in the folder. "Um... your ward is 9038. You may go now; I'll be right there shortly."

"Okay. Thank you."

Fraine followed the aisle toward the ward with numbers 9030 up to 9040.

She has been on this floor many times and is already familiar with the numbers.

Fraine pushed the door open; the room was no different from the previous room she had stayed in on this floor.

She placed her bag and attaché case on the sofa, then sat on the sick bed.

Fraine didn't wait that long; Nurse Wella followed her right away, pushing a cart with medical tools she needed to check her blood pressure, get her body temperature and draw out some blood.

"Miss Fraine, your attending nurse tomorrow is Jasmine."

"I see. I'm glad to know."

Jasmine is like a friend because she is chatty with her patients. Anyway, she instantly shut her mouth if you requested some silence.

Fraine wants Jasmine to be her private nurse during treatment because she knows how to comfort and encourage someone. All of her stories about her past patients are inspirational.

Jasmine has been attending to patients with exceptional cases, and her favorite person is the mother-in-law of a wealthy son.

The girl is too vocal in sharing how she loved that family as they were down-to-earth people despite their fortune. The family was trying to live behind all the drama from high society.

Those people are not down to earth, except for a few. But many of them think they own the world. When Jasmine said that, it made Fraine remember the proud, wealthy family she hated so much.

"I will draw out some blood now," said Wella.

"Okay."

Fraine returned to her senses and watched the nurse take out a giant syringe. Sometimes, she still feels a little nervous, even though she has done this many times already.

"Alright. Your fasting began at midnight, Miss Fraine." Wella reminded her before she left the room.

"Okay, thank you, nurse Wella."

She could still drink her fave cappuccino later. Fraine thought, watching the nurse disappear at the door.

Now that she was alone. Fraine walked toward the walk-in closet and took the robe that hung in the cabinet, then pajamas on the drawer.

The room has a monitoring camera, so the closet and the comfort room are the only places she has complete privacy.

Being in the VIP ward, the hospital provides her with a brand new hospital gown, a pair of pajamas, a bath towel, and a robe, including toiletries.

She took a shower, then dried her hair. The bathroom is actually like a deluxe hotel; it has everything she needs—even a hairdryer. But she isn't here for a vacation but fighting to live.

After putting on a pair of pajamas, Fraine checks her messages and email. She also had two missed calls from her boss, so she called him back.

The call connected right away, and her boss wanted to check her out and apologize.

The G Company CEO knew she was having treatment, so the older man asked about her condition.

"I'm fine, President Galvez. It's the usual procedure. As long as my body accepts the treatment, I'll live." Fraine sounded joking, but deep down, her heart said it was the facts.

"I'm praying for you… You are a good girl, so I wish you the best. Always remember that, Fraine."

Fraine could sense a strange tone from her boss' statement. It left her speechless until the call ended.

She muttered to herself. 'What does that mean?'

Now her boss gives her a puzzle. 'Is he firing me or something? We aren't parting ways, right?'

"Fraine, don't worry about the contract. Chairman Dale assures his grandson will sign the contract first thing tomorrow."

"Okay, sir."

Her boss ended the call, and Fraine left speechless. 'That even became weirder.'

Earlier this evening, the chairman offered her the best wine in the hotel. Now the chairman personally pursues the Dale Enterprise director.

'That's random.'

Douglas Galvez was seated behind his desk on the other side of the country.

Guilt is eating him up after he agrees with Chairman Dale's scheme. He is hoping that Fraine will understand why he did it.

Honestly, he could not decline to cooperate with the chairman, as he would pull out their orders if they were not associated with his plan. And he could not allow the company built by his father to lose so much and go bankrupt.

'What a sly fox.' CEO Galvez thought of Chairman Dale.
