Chapter 1 - Everything starts with a monologue.

'You know, life isn't always fair, some people are born in a good family, rich in love and with a safe future guaranteed, while some don't have even one.'

'I wasn't the born in the worst situation, but i can tell that my life for sure wasn't a good one, born without parents and raised on the streets until i was 8, i've seen my fair share of the ugly side of the world, where when someone has no backing and no power, their life ends up at the hands of others.'

'The ones that have some type of special talent or a rare skill that is good enough to be valued for someone might get protection, food, a place to sleep, training in the area they are talented, and a future they can look forward to, of course there is no free lunch in the world, so if you happen to be one of the valuable ones, you still have to work for the group that helped you, generally until death.'

'The ones that don't have this kind of talent or skill might end up as thieves, slaves, prostitutes, test subjects or just a random corpse in a dumping ground.'

'In this matter i was lucky, i was born with a rare skill [Parallel Processing], this ability made me able to process a lot of information much faster than normal, multi-tasking 2-3 things was the norm for me since i was 6, and that was the skill that made me valuable in the eyes of the HERI: Human Enhancement Research Institute.'

'A Governmental Organization with the objective of enhancing humans, mainly with mana, magic engineered machines or biotechnology.'

'One of the government scouts that was collecting test subjects in my area found my hiding spot when I was 8.'

'I was captured and brought to one of the government compounds, with other kids; I recognized some of them but most I didn't, they probably were from other cities or villages.'

'We all passed by a sorting, where they divided us in three groups, the ones with good combat based abilities, the ones with good research based abilities, and the ones that didn't fit in the other two groups.'

'Originally i was in the combat based groups, since they thought that my ability would led me to be an exceptional mage, sadly i had a trash mana pool and low stamina, which made prolonged combat situations extremely hard.'

'When i saw the look of disappointment on the face of the evaluators i feared that i would be put together with the ones that didn't have any value, at that time i didn't know exactly why they weren't taken back to outside even after they were evaluated as not good enough for combat or research, but i had a strong feeling that whatever the motive was, it was not a good idea be part of that group.'

'Luckily although i was not good enough to be used in combat, i had enough potential to enter the training for researchers, an area in which, to my surprise, I was beyond talented, in no less than five years i was already working as an assistant in true experiments at HERI, three years later, when i was sixteen i became part of the main research team, my ability grew with me, at that point the amount of work i was able to do, was comparable with a hole research department off a medium sized company.'

'If not for the fact that the whole research department of HERI was filled to the brim with geniuses, i would probably already be the head researcher of the organization.'

'Time passed, I was already 20, that 3 year period was probably the best part of my life, i was promoted as vice leader of the research department, and more importantly, i met Jane.'

'She had just been transferred to my compound since the compound where she used to work ended up exploding due to a failed experiment . Most of the researchers were dead, but Jane survived since she was sick that day.'

'She had a pair of auburn eyes filled with gentleness and intelligence, a long shining black hair that almost reached her knees, a beautiful face that made anyone that looked at her get lost for a moment and her almond smooth skin, complemented her perfectly, especially with her white lab coat.'

'I would be lying if i said that i wasn't attracted to her at first sight, especially since we were close in age, she was 3 years older than me.'

'Her ability was [Mind Network], it permitted her to be able to connect people's minds, with her mind being the main hub, we ended up having a great synergy with each other, since my [Parallel Processing] made me able to support her network, making the communication and dissemination of information between the research teams in our compound something unparalleled.'

'In the first month or two, we didn't talk with each other much, but after we accidentally found the synergy between our abilities, we started to work together every day.'

'At the start our relationship was just as coworkers, but as time passed we grew closer, not only our abilities had a great synergy, our personalities seemed to complement each other, she was as cautious and subtle where i was rash and blunt, when she started to overthink stuff it was my time to calm her down, when i started to do something crazy without thinking, it was her time to calm me down.'

'Little by little, we started to appreciate each other more and more, we started to hang out after work, sometimes in my house, other times in her's, we talked about what we liked, we told each other our stories of how we got into working for HERI and how grew up before it, her story was similar to mine, the difference being that, she was brought to HERI when she was 6,and not 8.'

'Things were going well, each day was the happiest day of my life, and each night was unforgettable, we moved together after just a few months of knowing each other. A year after that we got married, we were so happy that day.'

'Sadly nothing lasts forever, two year after our marriage the situation around us started to get turbulent, our country started a war with the neighboring country, at that same time Jane got pregnant.'

'At the start nothing changed much for us, but as the war went, our research that was already morally dubious at best, got even worse.'

'The situation was not good and the higher ups were starting to pressure us even more, the types of experiments got crazier and more dangerous, we started to try to fuse high grade monsters like drakes and demons with humans to try and make super soldiers, the survival rates were 10 to 20 times lower than before, and even those who survived could not be called human anymore.'

'At that point Jane and I started to argue, she already didn't like our research before, and with all of it getting worse she wanted us to run away from the organization, while i wanted to continue the research, and maintain the good life that we had instead of becoming fugitives.'

'We both had already contributed to the deaths of thousands of people during our experiments at that point, and i didn't see the difference between that and what we were doing now in the war, if we were able to maintain the life we had, i didn't mind sacrificing others.'

'But she did not see things that way, we kept arguing with each other for some weeks, never getting into a conclusion, she didn't want to be part of this war, neither she wanted to keep killing people for her self gain, and especially she didn't want her kid to live in the same cold and crazy environment that we grew up in.'

'Then she gave me an ultimatum, she said she was going to run with or without me and that i had a week to decide whether our child would grow up with or without a father.'

'At that time i was so pissed that i almost told the higher ups her plan to desert HERI, but in the end i decided to go with her and our child.'

'Our situation was not good, it was really hard to run away, luckily we both had high positions on the lab so we faked a project idea that required us to go out to the field of one of the battles, after we got there we decided to head to a forest that was connected to three countries, our's, the enemy's and a third neutral country.'

'After a few months traveling, and hiding, we almost got there, sadly and ironically one of the successful experiment, a half drake, half human that went berserk and got lost in that forest, ended up crossing paths with us, the creature was strong enough to kill us three, since neither me nor Jane had any experience in combat.'

'In the end we were able to escape the experiment, in the middle of our run we ended up falling into a river, and with the speed of the water current plus the low intelligence of the creature, we were able to get away, but that was not without a cost, the current was to strong and Jane ended up having an miscariage.'

'From then on we were devastated, Jane no longer talked with me like before, she had become more quiet, her movements sluggish, she started to isolate herself, sometimes lashing out at me, but most times lashing out at herself.'

'She blamed herself for not being careful enough, for not having eun away sooner, when the war had not started, for running away now, even though we could have given our child a decent life in the HERI compound.'

'For a week there was not a single time that she was able to sleep the whole night, i blamed myself for it too, but now was not time to hesita.'

'Days kept passing and we kept getting closer and closer to the neutral country, but every day Jane looked worse, at some point, Jane started cutting herself, if i had not stopped her, she would probably have already killed herself.'

'When we were one week away from the neutral country we had a big fight, i had stopped her from cutting herself again. She lashed out at me, saying that if we had run earlier, before the research fusing humans and monsters had started to get serious, the monster that caused her miscarriage would never have existed.'

'This situation had already happened countless times, but this time i exploded, i lashed out at her saying that if she had heard me at that time and not given me the ultimatum we would be having a happy life with our child by now.'

'She started crying even harder now, she started to lash out at herself, saying that she did not deserve to live and that she killed our baby.'

'Guilt started welling up inside me, "we were just one week away from a safe space, why the fuck did i lashed out at her now?".'

'I started to cry, i tried to fix the situation, i apologized, and said that she had not killed our baby, i was just hot headed, and ended up exploding on her.'

'But at this point, she didn't seem able to hear me anymore, she just kept blaming herself, apologizing to me for being a bad wife and a bad mother, and crying. No matter what i did, i was not able to calm her down. That night we cried ourselves to sleep.'

'She stopped eating the little that she ate before, i had to carry her most of the time, since she didn't seem to have energy even to walk.'

'Two days later Jane killed herself.'

'She left a note where she wrote:

"I'm sorry, not that only i killed our child, but i'm also being a burden to you.

I hate you for not stopping me from running away,

and i hate myself for hating you.

I love you.

and i hope you have a better life without me.

I'm sorry" '

'That day i lost a part of my soul.'

'If i had run earlier, If i had learned how some type of martial art, if i had learned magic, if i had tried harder to keep us safe, if i had tried to change the way the research was done, if i had forced Jane to stay with me at the compound, if i had not lashed out at her, if i had done anything other than accept what was happening at my surroundings as things i can only comply with, i could have saved Jane and our child.'

'But in the end, there are no ifs in the world, i had already accepted that i would never be good at magic or combat so i didn't bother to learn it, i had already accepted that i was part of a gray organization that did experiments with humans so i didn't try to change it, nor tried to get myself out of it, if not for Jane i probably would have kept going, using the excuse that i was just doing what i was told to do, even though i knew how much suffering i was causing to others, it was never my fault, there was always a reason to why i was doing what i was doing.'

'At that moment i decided to change, i decided to never accept things as they are just because "it could not be changed".'

'With my pitiful mana pool, i tried to do something, i circulated around her body, trying to make her organs work again, wishing that by a miracle i would be able to save her, in some way i didn't know.'

'But that was futile, i didn't have enough mana, nor did i have the knowledge of how to heal, and even if i had, se had died while i slept, more than an hour had passed the chance of even a good priest resurrecting her was null.'

'I knew that, but i still tried, with everything i had, and as expected, nothing happened.'

'I cried and shouted to the skies, asking for a second chance, no matter the cost, i screamed that if there was a god or even a demon in this world i would sacrifice anything to be able to make Jane live again.'

'But my cries went answered.'

'I buried Jane, so that at least the animals of the forest would not eat her corpse.'

'Then, i shut down, i kept walking, now lost, i didn't know where i was going anymore, and also lost the notion of time. After what felt like a long time, i woke up from my trance, i didn't know where i was, or what i was doing before, i also didn't know how much time had elapsed since Jane's death, it could be a day, a week, maybe even a month.'

'But none of this mattered anymore, I looked up. In front of me there was a spatial distortion. I had heard about them from a colleague that was working with the idea of trying to make a human that was capable of teletransporting.'

'Little was know about them, some tough it was a portal to other dimensions, others tough that it was a accumulation of mana so dense that was able to distort the space around it, creating what looked like a spiral portal, but was in fact just a big concentration point of mana.'

'Some people even believed that if you were lucky enough to find one, if you were to enter it you would gain unfathomable power.'

'An idea flashed in my mind, "maybe if i enter it i would be able to revive Jane".'

'It was a stupid idea, but i had to try'

'Each step I took towards de distortion, I felt some kind of pressure grow, deep within my soul, but I kept going. When i got close enough, i felt a big headache and an insurmountable amount of pain spreading through my body.'

'At some point i started to get sucked to the distortion, then i heard a ripping noise behind me, while i was getting sucked i looked behind and saw my body laid on the ground.'

'Before i could even process the scene in front of my eyes, i was completely sucked inside the distortion.

'That was how i died'.
