"Hey, Kyla," Matthew waved her over. He was sitting on the hood of his car, taking a smoke.
"Hey, yourself," she settled beside him, not losing her grimace.
"You want one?" He had taken out a pack of cigarettes and offered her a stick.
"No, thank you." she declined. "Is he always an ass?"
Matthew laughed. "Yes, but it comes with the job. He didn't get to where he is today, by being the nice guy."
"I see," she turned her head to him. "Do you think if I ask nicely, he'll tone it down a notch?"
"Probably," he smiled.
They settled into a comfortable silence, watching Chief McCarthy address the press. A group of people had gathered behind them to listen in on the announcement.
"How are things going for you here?" she asked.
"The town is messed up, Kyla." he took a long drag and released it. "Everyone here is crazy."
"Tell me about it," she mumbled in agreement. "How's your life like in the County?"
