Chapter 27 - Fragments of the Past (A Confrontation of Truth)

"Krista? Is it really you?" The vampire's tone suddenly changed.

"It's not possible." I turned to look at the vampire with the icy voice. He was staring at me. He was as surprised as the others.

"You came back. Why did you come back?" The vampire with the honey voice asked. He came closer to me and whispered. "It's not safe for you here."

"Don't worry. We'll protect you. We'll keep you safe." The other vampire said. Then, he held my hand and started pulling me along.

I broke free from his grasp. "Who are you?" I asked them.

"What are you talking about? It's us. It's me, Christian." The honey-voiced vampire said.

"And it's Jeremy. Don't tell me you've forgotten us." The other vampire said.

"I don't know you. You have the wrong person." I declared.

"What? Are you playing games with us? Is this your idea of revenge?" The vampire who introduced himself as Jeremy asked.

"Revenge?" Why? What did they do to me? "I have no idea what you're talking about. My name is Annie. I just arrived in the capital with a friend."

I noticed that the other three vampires who were seated had also become edgy. I knew them. I must have known them from before. They stared at me for a while longer. They were probably trying to figure out whether I was lying or not.

"You're not Krista then?" The vampire with the icy cold voice asked. His voice sounded even colder. I felt like running away.

"No. I am not." I said.

"Alright. Take her away." He ordered.

"What?!" The big brawny guy grabbed me once again and began pulling me out of the room. "Let me go! What are you going to do to me?"

"You're an outsider who came here in the middle of the night during curfew hours. What do you think we'd do?" The cold heartless vampire said. Something about him was piercing my heart. It hurt. "Lock her up."

Then, in a flash, I was freed from the big vampire's grasp and was under the light again. Someone was standing in front of me, shielding me from the vampires. I lifted my head to look at my savior. To my disbelief, it was Kilian.

"What are you doing here? How did you find me?" It was unbelievable.

"You were acting strange that morning so I came back halfway on my way to school. I found your note and had been following your scent."

"This is ridiculous. I clearly told you not to come."

"As if I'd let you come here unprotected." Then he turned to the vampires. "I dare you to touch her. Try it and I'll rip your throats out."

Then the big brawny vampires attacked us. One moment a vampire was grabbing my hand, the next moment I was shove to the wall. Things happened too fast. The people in the room began screaming and shouting and running away. It was pure chaos, and we were caught in the middle of it. I was grabbed and pushed and pulled countless times. I was so engrossed in making it out alive I only realized later that Kilian had been holding his own against those vampires. But how? He's my son. How was he…?

"I told you already. Leave her alone or I'll kill you." It was a threat. He meant it. I looked at my son's face and saw the bruises on his handsome face. He had a cut on his lip and a few scratches on his cheeks. He was obviously hurt too. His right arm hanged on the side.

"You're hurt. That's enough. Just get out of here." I told him.

"What? No! I'm not leaving you!"

"Listen to me just this once, okay?" I hissed. "With your speed, you can definitely run away from here."

"You're obviously not a vampire." The one named Jeremy said so suddenly. "A half-blood? How is a half-blood here? Moreover, marriage between vampires and humans isn't allowed. How are you alive?"

"There's only one answer. Some still ignores the law." The vampire with the eyeglasses said.

"You are an abomination." The cold heartless vampire said.

"I'll surrender. You can do anything you want with me, but let her go. She did nothing." Kilian said. Unbelievable. I was being protected by my own son.

"What are you saying? I'm not leaving you." I said angrily.

"Aren't you two sweet?" The cold heartless vampire spoke again. "Why are you so willing to risk your life for each other? What's your relationship?"

"That's really none of your business, is it?" Kilian said. He wasn't fazed at all. My boy had grown into a man. His courage and determination was making me emotional.

"It seems you really don't understand the situation you're in right now." A calm-looking vampire said. Then in the blink of an eye, he was behind me. "If you move, I'll kill her."

"What do you want?" I demanded and courageously turned to face the vampire behind me. "If you want to kill us, then just do it already."

He was silent for a minute. "You. Who are you, really? That face, that voice, that blunt personality." He said. "Krista. It's you, isn't it? Why did you come back? Why now?"

"I already told you, my name is Annie. I have no idea who Krista is, and I have no idea who you people are." I said with conviction. "You either kill us now or let us go."

"Are you that keen on dying?" Then he grabbed my arm.

The vampire flew across the room after Kilian pushed him away from me. The vampire hit the wall and the concrete crumbled. The vampire straightened himself and the calm collected exterior he had started showing signs of aggression. We pissed him off.

"Marcus, stop." The vampire with the glasses said. Then he turned to the cold heartless vampire who had been watching the drama from his seat like a king the entire time. "Kai, what do we do with them?"

Kai. Where have I heard that name before? Something about his name was filling my heart with loneliness. Who was he? My head suddenly hurt. I fell on my knees, with my head between my hands.

"What is it?" The worry in Kilian's voice echoed.

"What's the matter?" The vampire named Christian came to us and reached out his hand. Kilian stopped him and grabbed his wrist.

"I warned you already. Don't you dare lay a finger on my mother." Kilian said. His voice was threatening.

"What did you say?" The vampire with the icy cold voice slowly walked toward us.

"She's my…."

I didn't get to hear the rest of the sentence. I blacked out.
