Chapter 8 - Chapter 8: A Cracker Morning

November 12, 2067 (Elliot/Sarah)

BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! BEEP!

The alarm rang loudly through the once silent room until an arm rose from the pile of limbs on the bed to shut it off. A long agonizing groan followed as Elliot sat up, he rubbed his eyes while dreading what was to come later today. When trying to get out of bed he noticed a pair of arms wrapped around his waist, stopping him from leaving. He looked down, noticing Layla hugging him for dear life as she was pulled halfway out of bed. She mumbled something along the lines of "five more minutes" and "I don't want to get up now". Chuckling, he untangled himself from Layla and re-tucked her next to Kiara who slept next to Sarah.

With that done, Elliot then headed towards the closet where he picked his outfit for the day which consisted of a black suit and red tie. While ironing any wrinkles he might have missed the day before, he heard a set of footsteps followed by the creak of a closing door. He looked up from the Iron board and saw a half-asleep Sarah leaning against the front of the door.

"Why are you up? I'll wake you up in ten minutes, go back to bed," Elliot suggested.

"It's alright" Sarah yawned as she rubbed her eyes, "I needed to wake up early anyway to make breakfast the girls need for today"

"Oh, all right…"

Elliot sighed "watching that movie last night was a horrible idea". Every week on Saturday they would each take turns picking out a movie to watch, this week was Elliot's turn so he picked the scariest movie he knew, The Shining.

"Yea it kind of was, though I find it kind of funny how the girls were begging us to allow them to sleep on our bed" Sarah laughed.

"I'm glad you enjoyed the aftermath of my decision, I sure didn't. They kept whimpering and moving all night" Elliot grabbed the bridge of his nose, "I could barely get a bit of sleep"

"Well next time you should think before choosing a movie where seven-year-olds won't come begging", Sarah said with a smirk, "well I need to go get breakfast ready".

After watching Sarah leave, Elliot changed into his suit and did his hair before heading towards the front door where he packed up all the sports gear into two bags of two different colors. He then looked at his watch noticing that it was time to wake up the girls.

Walking back into their room he noticed Kiara spread out covering two-thirds of the bed, while Layla slept on the edge at risk of falling off. He shook his head in amusement as he stared at Kiaras' smiling face as she drooled. 'Now I'm starting to feel guilty waking them up, she looks like she's having the best dream ever' Elliot thought.

He turned on the lights before yanking off the sheets from their clutches, exposing them to the cool air. They both hissed at the light and proceeded to curl up against each other for warmth. "Oh no you don't!" Elliot laughed as he grabbed Laylas armpits and set her on her feet next to the bed before doing the same with Kiara. They both stood there aimlessly, swaying in their drowsiness until he pushed them both towards the direction of their bathroom. They stumbled down the hallway grumbling about how it was too early and that they wanted to sleep a bit longer.

With that done, Elliot then headed to the kitchen to see what fabulous breakfast his wife was making, and much to his delight it was his favorite. The smell of pancakes, eggs, and bacon got stronger as he got closer to the dining room which was situated right next to the kitchen. There, he saw Sarah already setting the table with everything you would ever need for a great meal. "Wow, it looks great, smells great too"

"Dig in, I already told the staff below to get the car ready"

"Well don't mind if I do". Elliot wanted to get as much down his stomach before Kiara comes, she was insatiable, once she got to the kitchen the food might as well be gone. Of course, Sarah also had the same thought so she too ate quickly, only saving a bit in case Layla comes too late after Kiara and had nothing to eat.

It's been seven years since the girls had been brought into the world and every day was an excitement, they grew to have their personalities, and watching them grow up throughout the years was one of the perks of being a parent. Even now, they still have much to learn about them. Just last night they found a lot about them; Kiara loves stretching out and kicking while she sleeps, as for Layla she's the complete opposite. Layla likes keeping to herself and huddles herself close with her knees close to her chest, the only similar trait they had was how they are both drawn to warmth like a fly towards light.

Just as Elliot finished his last pancake he heard two pairs of feet running in their direction, he looked up from his plate watching as Kiara and Layla rushed towards the table. Immediately they began to fill their plates, grabbing everything in sight, ignoring the fact that they toppled over some condiments in their rush.

Sarah sighed as she watched the mess unfold, apparently all the table manners went completely out the window when it comes to the both of them. Elliot looked at the time, noting that they only had a few minutes before having to head down towards the car, which would explain why they were stuffing their mouths at the moment.

"Make sure to bring your jerseys and shorts before heading down. I got all your gear, so don't make your mother get everything for you" Elliot said. He and Sarah got up and began to head to the front door listening as their daughters ran back to their rooms to change into their clothes.

With the bags Elliot packed earlier that morning they both exited their apartment. Leaving the keys in the doorknob so the girls could lock the door behind them, they walked in silence to the elevator.

As Elliot pressed for the elevator Sarah decided to break the silence "Why did you place Kiara in the all-girls soccer league? I would understand why Layla is there but why Kiara? it's way too easy for her"

Elliot gave Sarah a long look before responding, "The girls wanted to play together, you know how competitive the Joint League is" Elliot said, proud of how considerate his daughters were to each other. "If they were to play in the Joint League, only Kiara would be able to make the team and play, while Layla would be benched"

Sarah looked away in thought before looking back at him in accusation "you are more than capable of pulling some strings to have the both of them play together".

Elliot sighed in defeat, "that's what I said to Kiara and Layla but they both refused, they wanted to play together, fairly, and not because of my intervention". He hesitated before continuing "I would more than gladly place them both in an environment where they can challenge themselves, but as of now only Kiara is on that level, it isn't Laylas forté to play sports."

Sarah nodded in understanding, she had also noticed how talented Kiara was on nearly every sport she tries. While Kiara had her talent, Layla was a special case, she was smart, way smarter than a child should be at her age.

Elliot noticed Sarah opening her mouth to ask another question but was interrupted by a dinging sound coming from behind them.

*DING

And right on time, they saw two girls running towards them yet again, barely making it into the elevator with them. The two girls gasped in relief, if they had been a minute late they would have missed the elevator and would be forced to take the stairs.

Elliot frowned as he noticed that they both were missing a key clothing attire that would help him identify them both. Luckily he brought an extra pair with him, this was a common occurrence, so he always remembered to bring a pair along with him.

After grabbing what he needed from his pocket he looked back at the girls, they were both wearing navy jerseys with white lightning running across their shirts and had their hair up in a ponytail. If you were to ignore the fact that they had different numbered jerseys they would have been identical. The only difference that he noticed was that one had already recovered from the short sprint towards the elevator while the other was still bent down on the ground gasping for air. He had a good idea on who's who but just in case he called their names in turn.

"Layla raise your hand"

As he expected, Layla was the one out of breath. He passed the red ribbon to Sarah so she could tie it on Laylas hair since Layla was occupied with something else at the moment.

"Kiara?" Elliot asked, he looked at the one standing up and passed her the green ribbon to tie around her hair too.

*DING

Just as Kiara and Layla finished tying their ribbons to their hair the elevators opened. They walked briskly towards the front entrance of the apartment where an attendant walked towards them from the front desk.

The attendant introduced herself and began to direct them towards one of the vehicles that were already up and ready for their arrival. Elliot gave a tip before walking around to the driver's seat. With everyone buckled in, they drove off into the streets of New York.
