Carter sits in the VIP room while Leo is wheeled back to surgery. His hand was badly damaged and needed a few screws and plates. There would be a lot of recovery and rehab for this momentary temper tantrum of his.
Carter is trying to find evidence of the theft of property by Mr. Shoten and what, if anything, he is doing with the prototype. Thankfully, Leo had a few people he could really trust and with KK's help, the process was going smoothly so far.
Together, they had precured a copy of the signature signed received receipt and an affidavit from the prototype company and the delivery person stating that it was indeed shipped and signed for by Mr. Shoten. KK even went as far as breaking his own rule, of not doing anything illegal, and hacked footage from CCV cameras showing the prototype delivery.
KK had been up all night working to find evidence after Carter called him. Leo hadn't given him the news and he had to find out what caused the inciting incident for the broken hand from Carter. KK was being paid handsomely to find evidence against Mage and her father. But this felt more personal and he wasn't quite sure of the reasons why he was even more determined to help Leo.
At this moment KK was sitting at a coffee shop across from the Fry Building. He was hacking into the files trying to find out what the lawyer was searching for. KK had figured out the lawyer was named Mr. Janson. KK was able to break into Mr. Janson's personal computer unnoticed and discovered they were looking into Leo's past and family life.
KK read the information file the lawyer had created. It wasn't something he should do, but he felt one: he should know if there was anything there that could hurt Leo but two: he was extremely curious about the CEO who had stumbled into his life.
From what he could tell, there wasn't much on Leo's life prior to creating Pinnacle. It seemed some information had been filled in but his family history looked clean if not sparse. The lawyer had nothing to work with.
That was a good thing for Leo and Pinnacle. KK couldn't find anything about Leo but it seemed the lawyer was also composing files on the Shotens. Possibly to protect himself if something went wrong.
KK grinned at the information in the files and began making copies of it for Leo. Hopefully he would appreciate the incentive to help. Leo had a long few months ahead of him to gain use of his hand. KK wanted to help as much as he could. He could sense the pain Leo had at the prospect of losing his company.
Carter was sitting in the room on his laptop when Leo was wheeled back in the room. He was still asleep from the surgery so Carter continued working. KK emailed the files to Carter. Carter looked through them.
He was surprised the lawyer had such information on the Shotens. Mainly that Mage was adopted and no one knew about it, as if it was an illegal adoption. Apparently the Shoten empire was built on lies and lots of thievery. Carter smiled at this info. It will come in very handy, very soon.
Carter called KK.
"Kirby, ( Carter had dropped the Mr. and just called KK by his last name) this info will help. Were you able to find anything else out about the whereabouts of the prototype. We have filed a theft of property charges with the police and FBI since it is corporate property. They will be doing their own investigation. I have sent them the relevant information. "
"Hi Carter, is Mr. Shin back yet? ( he was was just checking, Leo was his paycheck)"
"He just got back, they said everything went fine. Now back to the issue, prototype?" Carter chuckled at KK's extreme concern for Leo.
"Oh, yea. I tracked the prototype from the company where it was made, to Pinnacle where Shoten signed for it. From there I had no clue, until the makers informed me of a tracking anti-theft chip. They told me as long as it is turned on, it can be tracked, even without internet. So at this moment, they are tracking it and when it comes online, they will let me know."
Carter was impressed. He had found that KK was only 3 years younger than Leo and himself, but the kid was smart and intuitive. He had done some background on Kaden Kirby when they hired him, checking into his past.
Carter was shocked to find that Kaden had been abandoned as a child by his parents and grew up in an orphanage until he turned 18. Carter felt for the kid, it couldn't have been easy. He also found some psychologist's notes on Kaden about an apparent psychological problem but couldn't delve any deeper.
"Got it, let me know as soon as you know something. I will tell Leo the news when he wakes up. Are you coming by later? I have some things to do at the office and he shouldn't be left alone, he may get bad news and break the other hand."
KK laughed. "Yea, I will finish up here and come sit with him. I will bring my computer and keep working. " The phone went dead and KK started gathering his things. He stopped when he saw Mr. Shoten exit the Fry Building. He didn't know he was inside.
This didn't bode well. Three well armed guards walked with him to the limo as it pulled to the door. They acted as if Shoten was in danger. KK glanced around the area and didn't notice a threat. "Well, that's suspicious."
KK took a few photos and checked the surroundings as he left the coffee shop. It was weird for Mr. Shoten to have security guards like that. Normally it was only the one and KK didn't even see him. KK walked to his car and climbed in, pulling into traffic.
A few miles down the road he noticed a black car following him. He was headed to the hospital so it didn't concern himself with trying to hide anything or get away. He parked at the hospital, got out and looked at the tag on the car as it pulled in and parked, the man getting out.
He walked through the doors and pulled a piece of photo paper from his pocket. He leaned on an information counter and closed his eyes. He opened them and the paper became a photo of the car, tag and man exiting the car. He slipped the picture in his pocket and moved to the elevators. The man, dressed in black, a hat covering his face, followed him.
KK arrived at the VIP floor and checked in. He informed the hospital security guard about the man following him and walked down to Leo's room. He removed the tag on the door and stepped inside, closing the door after he looked down the hall a last time. He turned, Leo was watching him, a lift to his brow.
